Hi Peter,

I installed 2.0 on my desktop and I'm having trouble retrieving my cards from my 1.2.2 backup files.  Is there a guide somewhere to shows us how to upgrade from 1.2.2 to 2.0 version without losing our cards and other configurations?

Thank you for your help,
Kevin

p.s. mnemosyne is such a great program! unfortunately, I will stay with version 1.2.2 until I figure out how to properly upgrade to 2.0....

Hi,

Normally it should have upgraded the files automatically if they are
in a standard location.

Otherwise, just do 'file' 'import' 'Mnemosyne 1.x mem files' and pick
the location of your mem file.

Hi Peter,

This is what I did:
1) Installed a fresh copy of 1.2.2. By default, the ".mnemosyne" folder is located in your User folder (where you will also find "Downloads", "Appdata", "My Pictures" etc.)
2) I then replace the files in the ".mnemosyne" folder from a backup .mnemosyne folder to restore my cards and configurations. (No problems so far)
3) I try to install mnemosyne 2.0. After installation, I get an error message box that says:
-------------------------------------------------------
Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mnemosyne\mnenosyne.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
-------------------------------------------------------
4) I click the "OK" button on the box. Nothing happens.
5) I tried an alternate method where I complete uninstall version 1.2.2 and re-install version 2.0.  I tried to do the "import" of the 'Mnemosyne 1.x mem files' but the program doesn't recognize the files (in other words, there is nothing to choose in the folder where the version 1.2.2 files are located....just a total blank!)

I'm not sure if this is important to know (I think so) but here are some differences between versions 1.2.2 and 2.0 that I noticed:
a) when you install version 2.0, a "matplotlib" folder is created in your User folder
- also, the backup folder for version 2.0 is located in User --> AppData --> Roaming ---> "Mnemosyne"
(you will only see this if you un-install version 1.2.2 first before installing version 2.0 because if you install version 2.0 on top of version 1.2.2 then the Mnemosyne folder doesn't exist in the Roaming sub-folder)
b) the backup files for version 2.0 seem to be "db" format while the format for version 1.2.2 are "bz2" files

I am hoping I am not the only one having these problems.

More information about my system:
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
8 gig ram
intel i-3450

Thank you for your help Peter and this is an amazing program! I really wish I can use the newest version though!

Thanks again,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You can't import from the backup files directly, but only from the
true database (*.mem files).

I'm not sure if you still have an active *.mem database in Mnemosyne,
or only the backups. If you only have a backup, uncompress it, and
there should be an xml file inside it. In 1.x, import that xml file in
your database.

Then, the upgrade to 2.0 should detect everything automatically.

BTW, in 2.0 backups are in the same format as in the original
database, so that confusion will go away.

Hi Peter,

I was able to locate a .bz2 in my version 1.2.2 backup folder and I uncompressed it to get the .xml file inside it.  I was able to import this xml file into version 2.0, but now it says that I have "missing media."  What files should I copy from the version 1.2.2 folder into the version 2.0 folder?

Thank you very much for your help!

The bz2 backup only includes your learning data, not external media.

In the card browser, look at the cards with the missing_media tag, which will
give you a hint of what files are missing.

If you have a tag like <img src="bla.png">, Mnemosyne expects bla.png in the
default.db_media directory, which is typically in C:\users\Kevin\Application
Data\Mnemosyne\default.db_media.

Cheers,

Peter
