Just a reminder about next weeks meeting.

Here are the details
Date: 31st October, 2012
Pre-meeting 6pm @ Muttis downstairs (118 Elgin st, Carlton VIC).
Meeting 7pm @ Muttis upstairs (118 Elgin st, Carlton VIC). [Take Tram 96]
Hosted By: Andrey Sidorov
Meeting Topic X Window System architecture and a General problem solving workshop.
Problem Solving Workshop Feel free to bring along your technical problems to the debugging workshop. Some of the things we will be debugging are Hybrid graphics and power consumption.

For the debugging session I recommend we split into small groups of about 3 to 4 people who are interested in the same problem.

If you have a linux problem which you can bring the hardware to the meeting and have people try and solve the problem then please let us know the problem beforehand. Also make sure you take a backup before you bring it to MLUG just incase there are any issues along the way.

So far we have
 - Michael Pope - Getting hybrid graphics to work (Intel/Nvidia) on a Sony Vaio.
 - Bianca Gibson - Power consumption tuning, particularly the wireless card.
<Add your name & problem here>

Let's compile a list and see if we can form a few groups of people on the night and solve some of these problems, or at least have fun trying to solve problems.

Darn... I'm unable to make it either as IRL Shooter: Patient 0 is launching that day.

See you next year probably. Assuming that the zombies don't get me first.

I would like to make sure my new laptop can drive the projector.

Also I'd like to configure it to hibernate - I read that you need a swap disk so
I re-partitioned to have one.

Cheers ... Duncan.

Duncan.  Not sure which projector you mean, but if it is the one I take to MLUG, here's the situation.
It's an oldie but a goodie as they say.... ie:  it's paid for and works.

The one time we came unstuck was when the presentation laptop didn't have a 15-pin VGA output.

It is a Toshiba 4:3 ratio  1024x768 max output.    So the usual tricks are to ensure restriction to that size.
Practice on any old analogue LCD/CRT screen you have laying around, and get your laptop into dual-screen mode OR into running the main screen as the above specification and choosing mirror mode (i.e.: output is what you see on the main screen).  Ideally, the former split dual screen is better, but get used to arranging the separate 1024x768 output for the 2nd output.

The only quirk with the old Toshiba projector is that it sometimes needs a 'hurry-up' command to ask it to re-search/sync the inputs to find what input is receiving a signal.

I've recently purchased an ASUS Android tablet that has a MICRO 'really small'   (not mini 'medium')  HDMI output.   I then acquired a beaut Micro-HDMI to VGA cable.  It's terrific.  And it works on the VHA input of the projector well.   Of course the really wide tablet resolution means we get a black upper/lower border on the screen, but no big deal for illustrating things.   I was surprised to find such a HDMI to VGA cable didn't need some large bulky converter/adapter in the circuit somewhere.

Anyway,  anybody else who has HDMI to VGA adapters - that'd be great to test as well given this is an old projector being used by more recent technologies as the years go forward.

See you there Wednesday.

David.

micro-HDMI to VGA cable

A customer of mine needed one for his Samsung notebook and suggested a computer store near the corner of Burnley St and Bridge Rd Richmond - but they had none.  So I ended up with the following micro-HDMI to VGA part from eBAY.   For me, I wanted it for an Asus tablet  TF300 that came out in July.  But it would appear that it is common to a couple of earlier models as well.  Cost me $US 27 plus $6 freight and took about 14-321 days slow freight.  All good.

I see they have some online in stock (overseas) at this URL:

I really want to join you guys, but I have just 4 months learning the language here in Melbourne and probably I could just listen but not participate actively...

Come and join in anyway :)

There's no minimum requirements placed on anyone coming to a MLUG meeting, you just have to be able to get to Muttis.

Cheers,
Dave

Toni,

Does the caddy have USB (ie: not firewire only or esata only)?

Feel free to bring it along. As for the printer, you could bring it if you are willing to bring it up stairs. We have plenty of room so it shouldn't be a problem. What is the model maybe we could solve this one before you bring it along?
