Hi,

Others have said that you may create stuff in Autodesk 123d for the makerbot, but it seems that Autodesk can only save in 123d format. Am I doing something wrong here?

I can only save in 123d format. I can only publish in autocad ws, a 2d image format such as gif or tif.

The option to publish as autocad dwg is greyed out so that I cannot publish to that format (the button is not clickable).

If the software is hobbled in such a way, then it is pretty much useless. So, is there a reasonably priced paid upgrade that will allow me to save in multi file formats? Or different free/cheap software for image editing that will allow me to read and write in common file formats? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Please let me know. Thanks,
Elbot.

You need to register and log in, all free.

Mine has save as STL and other formats, my 14 year old loves it too!

There are two ways of getting an STL file out of 123D:

In the Save As dialog, you have the option of STL, amongst others.

Also in the top right corner, you can expand the little arrow and then you get the option to Make It, that will walk you through some steps to either order a 3D print or save an STL file. The advantage of this procedure is that it gives you some tools to reduce the polygon count of the object before export.

Oh! Good tip! I haven't tried that!

As you can see from first pic above, it would not let me save the file in stl format like you describe. Check out the 2nd pic below that, too. I can only save in 123d format. Is it because I only MS Vista, an unsupported OS? It works fine with Vista, but I just cannot save in any format other than 123d. I cannot save in STL format. Am I doing something wrong here? Or does it really not allow me to save in any format other than 123d? Thanks.

ELBOT,
In the pictures it shows you did not register and sign in because just under the Red X / top right, it should show your name, not "SIGN IN".
Re-read my suggestion from a couple days ago, first response to your question.

I tried the other suggestion and got all sorts of Z faults by Skeinforge.

Thanks. If you ever need anything let me know. I have the replicator so if you need to experiment with a dual plastic print, I'll be happy to help.
