What's with the Makerbot website?  Did I mess something?  There's a countdown timer on Makerbot.com that I don't remember seeing before, but either it doesn't link to anything or I'm not very clever, because I can't figure out what it is counting down to.  Does anyone know?  It seems too soon for a new printer release, and I was not aware of any big events coming up next week.  Should I be?

Whoa! It's got to be big to do a count down. Replicator kit? Please!

I guess they'll release something at the same time as apple, just to
take all the attention and make fanboys angry.

Or maybe not.

There was a discussion about a month ago about possibly loosing the
Thingiverse comments due to a change in the underlying platform (that
was beyond Thingiverse's control).

So, I suspect the countdown is an indication of a new website based on a
different platform - both MBI and Thingiverse. But that is just a guess
- maybe they are announcing a new product.

I hate to make guesses because I hate to be disappointed. I can really dream big. Maybe I should low-ball the guess so I'm not disapointed. How about this:

Maybe they're going to announce the 3D Systems buyout.

Hmmm, a DownloadAllTheThings browser plugin might not be too difficult to put together...  but you'd need a giant target drive to store it all on.

My guess:  Small but useful Replicator update.  Since they're already lasercutting the wood, my guess is a switch to lasercut acrylic with a built-in shroud to keep the temps regulated, and possibly a bump up in print area.  And I'd expect an official update in the firmware and software to improve print times and resolution, just to keep up with the joneses.

I saw an interview recently in which Bre went head-to-head with some salesbot from 3D Systems.  The 3DS lady was basically just parroting various marketing catchphrases and trying to sell her product and make Makerbots look inferior, while Bre came off as just another one of us geeks that is excited to share a slice of the future with everyone.  Anyway, the only point the 3DS lady made that I actually agreed with was her (unnecessarily snooty) remark on the Replicator's appearance.  It's a superb machine, but it looks like something your kids might bring home from arts & crafts class.  3D Printing has matured to the point where non-geeks are interested, and those non-geeks want an appliance - something that will fit right in among the xboxes and microwave ovens on the shelves at your local electronics store.

So that's my guess:  Mainstreamed appearance, and some already expected tweaks to go along with it.

Maybe they are coming out with a Replicator Mini. Smaller. Cheaper. Easier to use for noobs.

OH!

What if they are coming out with a Replicator Mega. Larger. More expensive. Harder to use for noobs...

I said it on the Google+ thread, but I'll repeat it here.

- 9 months seems too short for a complete hardware refresh.  They've only had Replicators 'in stock' for what - 8 weeks now?  This is the part of the tail where they can ship them fast and have recouped a lot of the RnD money.

- If they were going to intro new hardware, why not wait until the following week during Open Hardware Summit or Maker Faire when there will be tons of publications and reporters around that need to file stories...

I think it's either a software update (Miracle Grue?  They can boast about the speed....) or a website update (Thingiverse?   Some stealthy new features?)

Then again, every prediction I make here is usually wrong, so keep that in mind....

Well they missed the printer issue then.
Maybe they will introduce a new 1 pound sealed filament spool that will print a dozen shoes and cost $50.

You could attempt to order a large quantity of replicators on the store and see if it says not enough available. That might give you an idea if they have many left.

I think it's an improved Makerbot with a bigger print platform. If you'll notice, Bre Pettis did back the improved dual extruder upgrade project on kickstarter.com. A couple of days ago, he posted on this forum. I think he's read at least some of our gripes about the replicator. I'm hoping for no more kapton, no more wobbly, bendy hbp (it needs to be more solid and adjustment free), and no more disassembly to clean out the drive gears.

My fingers are crossed....

Guessing on guesses of guesses of guesses for the count down!

(1) Not a Replicator mini or max. They need to advance the technology to stay in the game. (Delta 3D printer influence maybe.)

(2) Not a buyout by any anyone as anyemployee or company in the world can just copy the design/build and off they go.

(3) No thingiverse update, just a www.makerbot.com update minimum.

(4) Big guess: tweaked Replicator with a CNC or Laser Cutter in it. Price target $2,500.

My best guesses haha!

I agree with the software side.

My guess, based on recent github activity (https://github.com/makerbot/conveyor) is that they might announce a closer integration of Thingiverse into the slicing process, so that very beginning users could download a pre-tweaked .thing file from Thingiverse for their Replicator, etc.  Since Makerbot seems to be using Dualstrusion as a product differentiator, it makes sense that they'd move to a file format that makes that easy (and STL doesn't).

Maybe you could even see TinkerCAD export a .thing file along with .stl?

Beat me to the tweet post. Karma be yours... wait, this isn't reddit.

I'm guessing bigger in size. Otherwise it won't be a fact. Therefore we can conjecture it is a physical object. Chances are looking good they're making a new 3D printer or upgrading the replicator. I personally hope it's a smaller/more affordable one.

If that is the case, call up customer support 6 days from today and complain. Since, others bought the Makerbot Replicator on another website for a $100 discount, then I'm sure they'll credit you $100 worth of plastic filament to compensate for your buying the older model Replicator. Your present Replicator works fine, it just needs some tweaking to get it optimized. I have a thermometer mounted in my Replicator  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:25564  and it usually goes close to 50C at the level of the extruders.  But I'm planning to close off the corner holes (to prevent heating the mightyboard), so I expect it may go higher, which I don't think is a good idea.  If it does, I intend to mount an exhaust fan on the hood, possibly temperature-controlled.

What about a DLP/resin based printer? It'd be nicely complementary with the larger format Replicator in the product line.

Well, the last time they did this (the Replicator announcement) at least they had a game you could play to decode a clue, but even that wasn't all that satisfying after you got the answer (or cheated and read the blogs....).  I'd like to see a "real" 3D scanner package or like others, a truly integrated RepG replacement.  3D Systems "Cube" software is mighty sweet even though not feature rich enough yet for more sophisticated adjustments (like fill ratios, for one!).

Well let's think from a business perspective, since ultimately Makerbot needs to ensure profitability..

What would be a strategic thing to do right now? Wouldn't the best move be to make the device more accessible to a larger audience? In other words, why not create a less expensive, more compact model that might not take as much space in one's house?

Personally, I'd rather have a medium sized device (e.g. the Replicator), rather than something smaller. But looking at where the larger market might be, a streamlined smaller device might be worth a shot. Especially if it is sub $1,000. This isn't hard to believe considering MakerBot is trying to bring 3D printing to a larger audience.

Releasing an improved software package would probably also be necessary to make it more accessible.

I'm from Texas. Bigger is better. The genius in marketing is not selling crap cheaper but to sell more expensively than your competitors and people still want to buy it. That's the genius in marketing.

I've resisted buying the cupcake because it was too small. I've resisted buying the TOM, because it was too small. Small means making small plastic crap. Big means making useful stuff like iphone case, shoes, handbags, bicycles, etc. Small means making whistles, bottle openers and paper clips. Why do I want to pay $1000 to make something I could get at the dollar store?

Making it available to a wider audience is NOT lowering the price as I've seen trailer park residents buy $2000 LED TVs. I have a friend who makes minimum wage who owns a $1400 AR15 rifle with a $400 scope. Making it available to a wider audience is making it more user friendly. I suspect that the new Makerbot model is going to be a bigger bot with a bigger build stage, a more user friendly software, and more robust machine that doesn't need as much fiddling. What I'[m hoping for and I'll get a 2nd Makerbot if it has these features;
1. no more sagging build stage when heated, use ceramic or a heat resistant alloy.
2. no more user adjustments for the build platform. use tempered glass that is factory leveled with shims. the springs under the present hbp sags with heat and time, needing constant adjustment and leveling.
3. no more kapton tape. use tempered glass. give users 2 pieces of tempered glass, just in case (glass is breakable, even tempered glass). I hear abs sticks to glass.
4. open geared extruder design so no more disassembly to clean the gears.
5. loctited screws and no more plywood. use heat resistant alloy, heat treated for extra stiffness and hardness.
6. air scrubbers, the abs fumes make me light headed.
7. enclosure. sell it separately as an "all purpose plastic box" to avoid infringing zcorp's stupid patent (or was it stratasys? i forget).
8. make the build platform even bigger so we could print larger size shoes, larger handbags, and bicycles with bigger wheels, etc.
9. user friendly integrated software; one click from thingiverse to print.

I would buy a 2nd makerbot if it had these features.

4th axis or Bre-man Master of the Universe? I'm stuck as to which one I think is better.

Anyone else thing we're long overdue for the return of the ABP for the replicator. I mean it's got plenty of space inside it. I'd be okay if it spat the prints out the side even, I'd just attach a spring to my (non-existent yet) side panel door.

I don't think it's going to really be a new model, so there's no reason to feel cheated or left out. I could be wrong of course, but until the countdown runs out, there's no reason for negative feelings.

I think that it's going to be a software release or they'll get the mightyboard up for sale as a separate item.

Whenever I get disappointed like that, I ask myself the following questions:
- Am I already going to be able to do nearly everything I need to with
the unit I already purchased?
- Will the unit I purchased last a long amount of time and be well supported?
- Does the unit I purchased have a good track record, mature
production software, and active community?
- Are there possible in place upgrades now or in the future for the
unit I purchased rather than having to replace it?

If the answer to all of the above is true, than whether one got the
slightly older model or the new hotness hardless matters. Keep in
mind that if you had got a new unit, you'd essentially be acting as a
beta tester for at least the first six months and there is no
guarantee that it would deliver a markedly better experience over the
long term.

I think the replicator passes at least the first three tests above and
I'd rather have a printer I can use now rather than six months from
now so even if makerbot releases a new printer, I'll be fine sticking
with my 1 month old replicator. I don't see a need for agonizing over
this.

If you are a 'value shopper', buying the last model just after the new
one is announced is normally the best time.

If you are wanting to be on the bleeding edge, you have to pay up just
after an announcement.

All the spots inbetween, you pretty much know something else will come
eventually.

This is true for electronics, new cars, and just about everything else
out that is 'released new'

Even iPhones seem to come out every 6 months, with new 'major' updates
every 2 years, roughly the cycle of most cell contracts in the US.

Yes, we all hate getting caught 'behind the curve' when we thought we
were leading, but it does happen to everyone on occasion.

Don't let it get to you. Enjoy, learn, and keep on Makin!

Get FireFox and the DownThemAll! add-on. Add a new filter named "Things" or something of your own choosing, add

download:*

As the extension filter. Then right-click in a thing's page and select Start Download with DownThemAll. A dialog will appear. Select a directory. You can also, at that time, provide a new directory name and the add-on will create it for you. Then, click Start (or maybe save... I'm not at my workstation to check.) DownThemAll will then download all links that contain "download:nnnnn," where nnnnn is the Thing ID.

After downloading several large projects, I realized it was eating some major time. The DownThemAll add-on is free (but they'd appreciate some cash lovin' if you're so inclined). It works a treat.

Makerbot has the most numbers. My replicator is 94xx. That means there are 10,000 makerbots. About 30,000 3d printers were produced since the 1980s. Most of them are obsolete so the majority are makerbots.

3D printed empanadas. That's it, the big announcement is a food printer! The cake IS TRUE!

My guess:
  • A new machine with...
  • Bigger, possibly much bigger, build area (eg. 9" x 9" x9" ) - this is becoming a key differentiator, either for printing bigger objects or many multiples of smaller ones
  • In order to make bigger prints feasible with less warping and peeling... PLA only, or at least PLA heavily favored. Note how much more PLA is in the Makerbot store. PLA only would allow a smaller, lighter extruder, which would lead to higher print speeds
  • New release of ReplicatorG and firmware, with a much more finely tuned release of Miracle Grue and/or Slicer
  • Move away from plywood for the case
A little bit further out:
  • Change to the electronics, maybe ARM or PIC based
  • Network connectivity, possibly designed to work directly as a Botqueue client
In a nutshell, a faster printing/faster slicing, bigger and more reliable machine. Pricing about the same or higher.

Of course, I might be wrong: the announcement might be a low-cost, China made, small printer.

I know its going to be an automatic build platform for the replicator.

I miss the ABP. However it has some serious design issues that would need resolving before I'd ever go back to one.

They are probably just moving to the Metro Tech Center building.  I rember reading that this would happen this fall.

I doubt its a new printer, maybe new software because so many people seem to want it.

I am so excited for this release. I've had my Replicator since February and it's fantastic! Everyone at MakerBot is so enthusiastic about what they do. I'm sure whatever MakerBot comes out with will be incredible, just as the past ones have been.

Oh so thats it
Its counting down to your delivery

My Replicator has been getting fixed for the last few weeks. It's supposed to be delivered on Wednesday, and I haven't had a working machine for weeks, so I will be a little disappointed if they release a new machine already.

Here's what I want (all Replicator-compatible, most important at top):
  • PCB extruder
  • Frostruder
  • ABP
  • Three extruders
Imagine... cupcake after cupcake after cupcake after cupcake. All automatic. But then -- a circuit board under PLA under the cupcake where I could put a battery and LED.

LIGHT UP CUPCAKES! :D  :D  :D  :D

Ok, I'm thinking a little out of the box, but still, probably very possible.
