Well John,

good to know we are not wrong with what we have always been thinking, AND it seems Steve Jobs had some likeable sides after all!  ;)))

Not that surprising a guy Jobs' age listened to vinyl. I'll bet he
was buying vinyl new when the only competition was 8-track and AM
radio :p

I'll also bet he had a very nice hifi to spin his records on. And of
course he didn't use his iPod at home, when you have a hifi why would
you use a portable music player?

I wonder if we'll ever find out what hifi Jobs owned.

Well here's what he had when he was 27...

The speakers are a bit bigger than the AR3a's that i had at the time!

Sort of looks like the turntable is a Transcriptors Skeleton. Maybe a McIntosh receiver or something like it. The speakers look familiar Acoustats maybe? My old memory banks are not grokking at the moment.

You are right about the speakers according to the forum where I found the link. They say they are Acoustat Model 3.

Why use an ipod or similar at home, when you have got Hifi ?

Very good question, but my experience with hundreds of kids is: They ALWAYS use it, wherever they are, no matter what their parents have got in their living room.
Even worse:  Whenever I use the word "turntable" I can see a huge question mark in many faces.....and I expect very soon the same will happen when you mention a music CD.......

I hope this general trend can and will be reversed one of these days.....

Whilst I can certainly wax sentimental about the sound of vinyl (and I accept that digital recordings are not technically as good), the practicalities of storing Vinyl and CD's in a modern centrally-heated home here in the UK does make the collecting and use of digital audio files attractive.

I have over 300 vinyl albums, 1000+ Cd's and probably 100 broadcast standard reel 2 reel tapes stored in my garage & attic all of which are no doubt deteriorating by the day through the advances of cold and damp.

I still have my Transcriptors turntable and Quad and Lecson HiFi available, but the ease with which I can locate and listen to a audio file from my computer, or the internet radio, does tend to mean that the vinyl (and CD's) stay in their storage. And despite the marketing onslaught, I still don't own an ipod or even carry music around on my phone!

I think the iPod 'dock' has come some way to allowing iPods (which, as
well as being portable are also great music storage devices - modern
iPods/PMPs can store up to 64GBs of audio, which is a lot) to be
enjoyed with hifis - so the proliferation of docks and front inputs is
helping the 'ipod generation' back into hifi. But between mobile
phones and iPods etc the days of large, permanently wired source
components are numbered, certainly. Well, NAS boxes are permenantly
wired, in as far as they have a power lead...

Speaking for myself, I still actually enjoy handling physical media -
I'm always going to want my CDs to hand, and I enjoy browsing through
racks and piles of CDs.

Do reel-to-reel recordings sell for much? I can't imagine ever making
my own recordings but if good music were obtainable on R2R then it
might be fun to get a R2R player in the future... I like old tech...
certainly the tape players still sell for good money. I suppose you
could make your own mix tapes...

Biggest problem with stored R2R tapes is 'print through' where the signal recorded on one layer of the tape starts to magnetically transfer to the layers above or below it on the reel. In a professional archive I believe they would have had a programme for rewinding every tape periodically to try and prevent this happening. Also the actual tension of the spooling on the tape machine can make a difference to this.

I was lucky enough to work for the recording materials division of 3M (Scotch Tape) here in the UK and was able to purchase recording tapes that were manufactured to a very high specification especially for the BBC. I o mainly recorded FM transmissions of BBC radio live music concerts and they recorded very well on my Sony R2R deck. I haven't tried to play one for many years and I suspect that they may all be corrupted by the 'print through' problem.

1)Nothing beats the original sound from the tape recorder it is in a
class of its own. Personally I own a couple of 1970s 24 track machines
and a few master tapes which I can use to remind myself of how much we
are missing.

Pressed the wrong key halfway through

2) My memory is hazy but I can remember always storing tapes onto the
right hand reel so that the print through was always in the right
direction to be less audible

3) Most kids have heard of vinyl but not R2R. I recently had a Revox
running in my office when my 30 year old daughter popped by. She has
grown up surrounded by hifi but still asked "what is that?" She knew
about cassette but not reels of tape

Love 24 track multis and 1/2 track masters. Still have a 1/2"x10" 8 track and a 1/4" mastering deck.

I have ruined my wife Jennifer's enjoyment of CDs, now that I bought several of her favorites on vinyl.

Hi Stan,

I have got a nice (semi-) professional UHER  R2R machine.  LOVE the looks and the sound, but it IS a big and heavy beast.....

And as I have said before: Whenever I mention turntables at school, I can look into many "question mark faces!"

Seems we (a little bit) older guys have come from a distant planet, right ?  ;)))
