Following this discussion on the Public OSM email list, OSM would be happy to fund and help coordinate a public survey to get some objective data that can help us learn more about things such as what users want the most, how we are doing as a project, and areas where we can improve.

For this survey to be effective and useful, it would be important for PLT, CLT, and OSM to work together to define what key areas to ask about and what the questions in those areas should be. So I would like to ask if PLT and CLT support this idea or not. If this idea moves forward, then I would suggest that a PLT/CLT/OSM working group be formed to work on the details.

If this idea moves forward, I think a good goal would be to try and have the results before JAB. We can use the results of the survey to help look at if we need to consider putting more effort and resources into new or different areas, and could also include using some of the surplus funds that have carried over from 2011.

Thanks,

paul

Hi. One idea that Elin and I kicked around a long time ago (and never had time to follow through on) was to do a very short "survey of the month" on Joomla.org. The results obviously would not be scientifically valid, but they could still be very useful (and fun). The idea was to have maybe 3-5 short questions about one topic and rotate it each month and publish the results as a blog. Topics could include: Who are you? (technical level, where are you, etc.) What do you use Joomla for? What do you like best about J? Least? and any other topic that could be useful and interesting.

That's just one idea (instead of having a one-time long survey). Maybe not mutually exclusive either, dunno. Mark

Hi there.

I like the idea of a monthly short survey. Short, easy-to-consume content is great for engaging the community, and we can also get valuable information from it.

All best,

Isidro

I think the monthly poll would be fun, but to get real data that we could use we'd need to do a real survey that would be more scientifically accurate such as Paul suggested. So I say do both :)

+1 to both short polls and an in-depth survey to get a meaningful picture of where we are doing the best, and where we need improvement.

+1. Maybe the short polls could go to the Magazine since it's already a monthly publication. Let's see what the Magaziners say ^_^

But I totally agree on doing a professional poll to get deep knowledge of our community.

Hi all,

Thanks to all who responded about this idea! I like Mark's idea for the shorter informal monthly polls in addition to a longer survey.

With no objections to the idea of a longer survey, I'll try to get this moving forward. I think getting objective feedback in some important areas can be a good way to help us understand better what people want, how we're doing, and how we can improve. For this first survey, I think it would be great if we could get the results by the time we meet at the JandBeyond conference in May.

If there are any members from PLT, CLT, or OSM who would like to be directly involved with this project, please either respond in this thread or let me know some other way. Please also let me know if you know of any people in our community with some good survey experience, or if you have any professional contacts in that area.

I would encourage PLT, CLT, and OSM to start thinking about some key areas that you would be most interested in getting freedback about from the community. We'll make sure that the team working on this project will followup about that before decisions are made about what will go into the survey.

Thanks again,

paul
