media change in joomla 3.0

i know this maybe not the place to talk about this, but just wanted to bring everybody attention on this.

We all know ( or i just assume we do )  that joomla's default media browser and media manager sucks and suck hard.  So I was wondering is it possible to make that in future joomla version you could change that  well for example to JCE  media editor ?  and adding main image to the joomla article would not be such impossible thing to do as it is now :)

and anyways what is logic having   editor with its media editor and media browser,  teaching you client how to use it and  then showing joomla's default  media browser and how to add images on it again...

You should talk to JCE's developer about potentially adding JCE's features
to the Joomla core :)

I wasn't joking :) Why would we take someone's work without their consent
and add it to the Joomla core? If you want JCE's features in the core,
talk to JCE's developer about potentially adding it.

About JCE Media Manager: Wasn't there an approach to using JCE in core and Ryan refused ? I don't think that there's a difference for his Media Manager. And i respect his dicison.

There was as GSOC project these year for rebuild com_media. But unfortunately i can't see any progress.

Look, I didn't want to post in annoyance the other day either about language or about the fact that  your post  insults people's work. Please keep in mind that this is a professional list that represents this project and will be in Google forever. 

This  is an open source community driven project. The "people" you mention are you as is 'joomla".  If you want a new media manager you need to code it or pay someone to code it, sign the JCA confirming that it is your original code not someone else's (and not code that is providing someone with their livelihood that is for sure)  and contribute it.  It's that simple.  

You can't expect other people to do it for you any more than I can expect you to do the development I am most interested in seeing.   You say you have clients .. to me that implies you have income so think about using part of it to create the media manager you want that would make your life better.  It's that simple. 

Also, this is the CMS development mailing list which means it is for people actively working on developing the core cms. By posting here you are really implying that this is a project you are considering taking on yourself. If that's the case then I'm sorry that I'm misinterpreting your posts.  If you want to make feature requests those in fact belong on http://ideas.joomla.org not this list.

There was an idea for a media manager GSoC project but no project.  There are about 3x as many ideas as projects which is as it should be.

But that list is also a great list of things for anyone to do that would be wonderful contributions to the Joomla core. If GSoC happens next year we can have it on the list again but at some point I hope people will come to understand  that counting on Google to fund core development is highly problematic in so many ways, although it is great when we have it and have such great student developers as we had this summer.

It's a large project and we needed the JImage package to really do it right so I think a number of efforts have died out. It would be great for someone to take it on, but they need to expect to spend several solid months on it to really do it right.  In the meantime there is always the ability to contribute incremental improvements such as was done with the uploader.

Here are some of my suggestions:
client side image processing as much as possible.
distributed storage/media server support: example amazon aws.
tagging to improve image search
drag and drop management w pad friendly buttons.
batch management
optional watermarks
db driven back end
optional google docs integration
optional gps location meta on uploads
new interface using bootstrap -  of course
better access control and seperation of user provided media.

What about suggestions to the media manager in the context of the wysiwyg in articles/content?

We all know its a pain unless you use jce so lets borrow some UX from jce, and joomlaize it. The Joomla 3 media manager is an ok starting point, has anyone seen any better working attempts at replacing media manager?

Great ideas.

Should we look at adding a table to store media information ( media)  since that is built into the media fields already (including created_by and date)? That would really let us make some progress on access control/ownership. Also, with the new packages from the GSoC students we'll have access to Picasa and FB images. It would be so great if someone would take up writing a package for for AWS to go with all the other ones that are being worked on.

These are quite a few suggestions.
I think we'd need to think about the base for the component, so it's
extensible with suggestions you added.
As Elin wrote, com_media revamp is quite complex and I'd be rather
minimalistic at the start. There's lot of great functionality that may
be added (maybe even via com_media plugins), but.. we should be
careful about feature creep.

Besides new JImage package (lot's of possibilities!), there's new
JFilesystem, relevant GSoC 2012 packages and jQuery :( as base JS
framework.

It would be great if somebody from community would step up to the role
of 'com_media revamper', set up GitHub branch and make contact with
ux.joomla.org community. I'm pretty sure this is not a task for 1-2
people, maybe that's why previous attempts kind of failed.

We need some smart and extendable architecture, minimal set of
features and a realistic plan.

What I'm missing most is the ability to manage non-image media (like
pdfs/ mp3s) trough frontend and some basic management actions in
frontend (delete & rename files, work with directories)

I wouldn't use DB tables for file/ directory properties (created/
modified date) to avoid possible conflicts when uploading files
outside media manager (ftp/ upload extension/ api). Besides this looks
like overengineering to me.

You could have a cron and button to import the way most of the document managers and galleries do. I think there are a lot of circumstances where you want to have ownership and tracking of media especially if you are using it for more than images e.g. pdfs and want to be able to have workflow around them or if  you want to have the option for image approval.
