Please discuss housing plans in this thread.

I believe the Indian Students Association at RPI will provide temporary accommodation for a week.

Alternatively, is anyone planning to book the official grad student apartments from the grad office? I was thinking of staying there for a few months and then looking for something else.

Hello,

I have checked the temporary stay option in the spreadsheet they provided on the Grad ISA fb group. Have you already contacted the grad office expressing your intention to stay there temporarily?

I quite liked the idea of the grad student apartments for the first few months/ first semester. Utilities included, convenient, nice rooms. I am also interested in off campus housing. If someone knows what utilities cost in those parts, could you please let us know?

An excellent page on off campus housing. A lot of information and a must read in my book.

Do also sign on for the off campus housing directory and listings at: http://housing.union.rpi.edu/. Off campus housing is way cheaper. Even single occupancy options cost 200USD less with all utilities included.

Do share your findings.

Thanks!
Sujoy

FYI, here are our other options for on-campus housing:

1002 Peoples Avenue:
$435 per person. Rent includes utilities, furnishing and all the usual appliances we look for. 3 bedroom, 1 bath, shared.

901 Peoples Avenue:
$600 per person. Included items same as above. Claimed to be recently refurbished. 3 bedroom, 2 baths, shared.

Off campus options seem to be around the 400$ mark per person, so still cheaper.

Thanks,
Sujoy

@Sujoy (and everyone else): Have you decided on housing? I'm looking into this now, and my options appear to be as follows:
  1. Ask the Grad INA for temp acco, then scrounge about for housing. I believe it's not advisable to sign a contract / pay a deposit with a private landlord before arrival. Have any of you done this, and looking for apartment-mates?
  2. Book RPI official housing in advance. The Peoples Avenue apartments are likely to be booked-up by now (I'll confirm and check). Is anyone considering City Station West?
Thanks,
Atriya

I'm still up for City Station. All things considered it seems to be a good deal. It's clean and well maintained, all utilities are paid for. Maintenance and stuff is well managed, rooms look good and spacious and its fully furnished. We also get individual bathrooms so there won't be any conflicts during rush hour. Factoring in the shops below (as claimed by the brochure, i don't know what shops really are there) where we can do our emergency shopping, the shuttle service, the proximity to campus and security provided, i think its a good deal. For those that are being funded it shouldn't be that expensive either. Now we can find 4 of us willing we can just go ahead and get one for ourselves.

I have checked out the off campus housing options on the union website. The quality of the housing doesn't seem that good and not all include utilities. There are just too many variables involved and i don't feel comfortable paying for a room without looking at it and meeting the landlord. It is highly advisable to pay for an apartment only after you've seen in and met the landlord/agency. While looking also look around for how far nearest grocery or department stores are and also distance to banks, cheap restaurants and gas stations. Come winter, walking far on a hill in the snow can get tough.

So, anyone up for city station?

Thanks and Regards,
Sujoy

I agree with most of this. Up for City Station as well. I believe there's a $200 deposit, payable online, which is refundable 60 days in advance - so for all practical purposes is non-refundable. Do you know if there's a contract for a certain length of time?

Anyone else interested in City Station (West)?

I asked around a bit, and several people have advised me against City Station.

The primary reason for this appears to be cost. Apparently, the cost of living in the 13 / 14 / 15th Street area is around $400 per month (rent + utilities), whereas City Station is of course $675. I'd actually much prefer to live in City Station, but the prospect of losing $275 a month is not attractive either.

Nevertheless I'm still considering City Station. Have asked the office about the contract.

I've got my id card. Not much to it. You walk over to Union on 15th street and walk into the office with your passport and I-20. They take a picture and hand you your id card. Takes a couple of minutes.

I don't think this is an enrolment though. That happens with the ISSS during orientation i think. Do check with your seniors for correct information. They can also tell you about the procedures accurately.
