Anyone know who manufactured the mast?  The forward
mast plate bolt on my newly acquired hull #186 is loose.
It looks like I need to drill out the rivets and drop the plate
down to access the nut.  I would like to have a new plug
before I start.   Any idea where one could get this?

Cheers,

Joe (#186).

Congrats on your new boat!  Where are you located?

I'm not sure who manufactured the mast, but I've taken that plate off the bottom of the mast before.  Mine went back on pretty easily.

You might also try here for mast end fittings:

Good luck,
Rick

When I look at my mast it appears that a piece was riveted to the mast and the plate bolted to that. I can see a self locking nut for the pack bolt through the track but I wonder if the front bolt is threaded into the riveted piece. I would appreciate knowing what you saw when you pulled the plate.

Hi Rick:

I am outside on Houston TX (on Lake Conroe).  I have been hesitant to take the plate off as it
appears that I have to drill out  the  our rivets and replace them with something, e.g. screws.
I have never been extremely successful with rivets but may have to try again.

Joe,

Have you tried using aluminum pop rivets instead of stainless?  I know what you mean about the stainless ones -- they are tough sometimes.  But I don't think the rivets at the bottom of the mast are under much load (if any at all), so aluminum rivets would probably work fine as replacements.

I guess you could use screws as replacements instead, but I'd worry about stripping the aluminum in the mast, because it's pretty thin there.  Plus, the salt water corrosion you'd get at the bottom of the mast would probably start to eat away the threads in the mast after the first year.

Let us know how it goes,
Rick

Joe,

I just realized you're only a few hours from Claire Kultgen, who just recently got a Johnson 18 as well.  I think she lives near Waco.  Are you sailing at in a local club on Lake Conroe?  Do you know of any other boats in TX -- maybe you all could start another fleet.

You should come to Waco, we have two Johnson 18s here and we are looking to get another. We have a weekly race going so far, but we'd love to gather up some J18s and race around.
We are also talking about bringing both boats to a race up in Dallas:  https://www.regattatech.com/public/FWBC/OldMan12/2012%20Ol%20Man%20NOR%20Final%20Rev1%208-24-12-1.pdf, it would be cool to have a small fleet.

Hi,

I'm another Jn-18 owner in Texas. I sail with Claire also in Waco. It'd be great to meet up with you sometime, Joe. I may come down to Clear Lake Oct. 6 for the great pumpkin regatta there.

There is another Johnson two hours east of us in cedar creek reservoir. So we know of 4 in Texas.

Yep, Max, Theo, and I have two Johnson 18s in Waco we are racing
Wednesdays, and plan/hope to buy 1-2 more over the next 12 months.

We will probably be going to Old Man of the Sea October 20-21, which
is a fun regatta, and it'd be cool to have others and have a class.

Claire

Hi Joe,

Did you ever find a replacement mast step plug? I've got the same issue as you.
