I heard the dates were mentioned at JavaOne - anyone have them?

Yep - March 26th to 30th - mark your calendars. We have the posse house again this year (the big one with the Jackalope) which is a great hangout/breakout location. Signup page should be available soon. Right now we are going with the topic "Leveraging your Corporate Synergies for a better Development Paradigm" or something like that :-). Should have a better topic soon, but it's getting hard to come up with broad meaningless statements that sound good to your boss. Any suggestions happily received (perhaps we can make a competition out of it - prize to be determined :-) ).

Hope to see you there.

Hi, first time poster to this group, but long time listener of the show here.. :)

A good name is always hard, yet so important some times.. For different reasons, I guess in this case it's mostly for show.. :P So maybe something like:

"Java Posse Roundup 2012
Advances in JVM technology and new trends in Java related languages"

Maybe the topic misses some "bus words", I don't know.. Just a suggestion.. I'm thinking of going to roundup, since I really like the podcast and the discussion from this conference. Since I'm still a student, I'm gonna pay for the trip my self, so the name does not really matter to me.. I do have two questions about the roundup:

What would an estimated price of the whole staying be? (included costs: registration fee, lodging, food, excluded costs: flight and alpine ski pass)

Is there anyone who does crosscountry skiing during the roundup? Or does most people do alpine skiing? Since I've been competing in cross country skiing myself, and I don't have that much money I was thinking of bringing ski gear and only do cross country skiing. I found this page, I guess that's the place for cross country skiing (it's 10$ a day), the "Free Bus Route" they write about is the same as the one going to the mountain I guess, so I should be able to use that to get there.

I'm from Sweden by the way, if anyone wondered.. :)

Hi Robert,

I've taken a look back at my expenses claim fom last year (work paid,
I was lucky, but I tried to keep costs down). It came to $1700.00 +
£884.00 (note the different currencies) which included flights,
accommodation, transfers to / from Crested Butte (I flew all the way
to Gunisson and back), breakfast and supper and the registration fee.
Stuff I couldn't claim was as follows:

Lunch - every day, about $10-$20
Cross County Skiing (Full equipment hire plus pass) - $20.00 each time
Expensive meal on the last night (I had to subsidise my work
allowance) - $50.00
Souvenirs / Presents - $asmuchasyouwanttospend

Finally this kind of answers your cross country skiing question. Yes,
we do go. There is a part virtually every day (inevitably led by
Dianne). It's fantastic and I go as much as I can.

I think that's it. It's definitely worth it. I'd recommend it to
almost anyone.

Hope this helps.

Hi Andrew and thanks for the reply, that was the exact information I was looking for.

The one part I'm not sure about though, was that you said two different sums, "$1700.00 + £884.00", was the one in £ your flight costs?

It get's quite expensive when you start to add up all the costs, but I'll wait and see how future side jobs works out. Do you Andrew or someone else remember how long time the registration is usually open or before it's full? I know it has not even opened yet, but still, I guess it might not be like Google IO that sold old in a couple of hours last year but you never know I guess.. ;) Maybe statistics can give a hint of how long time it is before you have to make the decision.

The cross country skiing is great. I don't particularly like downhill
skiing, so I stick to x-c and I always seem to find folks to go with
me. You can walk to the x-c trails if you stay in the town of Crsested
Butte, where the Roundup is held. If you stay up on the mountain, you
would need to use the bus.

Many people share houses, which is pretty fun and about the same cost
as a hotel room. There's also a youth hostel in town, which is even
less expensive.

The flight will certainly be your biggest expense, from Sweden. You
could be more frugal on lunches than Andrew was by buying groceries
and making sandwiches. We often take food to cook over to Bruce's
house in the evenings, so that can be pretty inexpensive as well.

Hope that helps.

I can't quote the other stuff but we currently selling flights with BA
from London to Denver:
Outbound from London Sunday 25 March
Return from Denver Sunday 1 April
£488.33 economy all inc.

(Coming back on Saturday 31 March bumps the price up to over £1,500!
Presumably due to a fortuitous combination of skiing holidays and
school hols.)

Vince.

Brilliant, go snowmobiling on the Saturday instead :-)

Oops - that was supposed to be in reply to the inexpensive flights from London, if you stay for an extra day...

OK - so posting on the right one this time.

It is possible to do this trip on a budget. As mentioned here, staying just one day extra can make flights really cheap (just go skiing or snowmobiling with that extra day). There is also a clean hostel in town that doesn't cost much if you are really trying to keep the costs down. A lot of people club together and share a house though, that's another way to keep the costs under control. After that, it's just ski rental and pizzas at the secret stash. :-)

You can do it for well under the cost of a JavaOne ticket on its own. ;-)

One thing to add about the hostel... because there is only one, be sure to book early.  The year before last (when I was paying for everything myself) I tried to get into the hostel, but it was already booked up.  So if this is the option that you are most interested in, then be sure to get your reservation quickly.  Last year I got a house with 3 other friends and I have to say... that's the way to do the roundup.  Totally awesome fun.

Thanks for all the inputs!

I will have to wait and see a little how my economy is a couple of months from now. But I sure will try and go if I have the money. I have some different side projects going on that may or may not generate money enough for this trip  Only the future will tell... But this all sounds awesome.. :)
