I'm planning to install a Rule 500 GPH automatic bilge pump in the
sump. I've only ever had the standard manual pump. Anyone got any
special advice on this install? Also, where is the preferred mounting
for the external fitting. I was thinking I'd mount it on the transom
near the manual pump out, but now I'm thinking that's too far. I
might opt better for an exit out the side athwartships near the deck
just a few feet from the bilge

My biggest water source is when I'm on the mooring, which has
significant west, north and north east exposure. In a heavy blow
there's a lot of rockin' and rolling, and I'm finding water is blowing
back into the boat through the self-bailer opening.

I was think of doing something similar. Mounting the pump in the bilge then routing the hose out the side next to the head vent line. I would like to have the hose routed in front of the bulkhead but there are those ribs in the bilge in the way of the hose routing.

I think there's a thread on this down the board.

My boat has a small sink in the head area with a through-hull outlet
just below it, but just above the waterline. I'm told you want bilge
pump outlets to be above the waterline (of course it's not when
heeled). Anyway, I never use the sink so I used that through-hull for
the pump.

I put a check valve in the hose just above the pump so water doesn't
drain back into the bilge and re-start the pump prematurely. Because
of the position of the outlet I also put an anti-siphon loop in the
hose (like you probably have in the head outlet hose). Technically
they call this a "vented loop" but mine doesn't have a vent.

Works fine.

Thin Man has a Rule 750 in the bilge. The hose runs alongside the manual pump pickup hose to a separate exit on the transom. I'm considering the new Whale pump which seems like it will fit better in the cramped bilge.

Hey Andy - Spring project list has a Rule 1100 automatic pump with the
hose going out the transom on it. The 1100 seems to fit nicely into
the bilge and just need to make up a bracket to hold it. I looked at
the 500 but didn't feel it was adequate should it really be needed.
The running amps were about 1 or 1.5amp more on the larger pump if I
recall which my battery could handle. Personally, I wouldn't go
athwartship for two reasons - the head loss will really bite into the
pump performance (prob get half of what it's rated to) and the risk of
water coming in while healed over is there too great without the
correct vents.

I picked the 500 because it appears to be the only one that will fit flush
to the bottom of my keel sump between a stringer and a keel bolt. Otherwise
I might have gone bigger. But truthfully, I only have a problem with water
in the bilge as a result of heavy weather or rainy days at the mooring.

The 500 requires a separate mercury switch so the trick is getting both the pump and the switch flat in the sump.  Plus there's the extra wiring and moving parts.  When my first 1100 stopped working I bought a 500 and the switch and fussed with it for awhile.  I ended up buying another 1100.

The 500 model I bought is automatic and contains its own switch so it’s all self contained.

This is the one I have my eye on as a replacement. I think the dimensions will allow it to sit at the bottom of the bilge rather than on top of the keel bolts. Anyone heard good or bad things about this new model?

Thanks,
Todd

What do your bilges look like?  On mine the there are dividers between each keel bolt that run all the way down from the floor boards to the bottom or about 8-10 inches. I can get some of the little pumps down there but the hose would be kinked when routed 90deg to come up.

The one that Todd linked shows the most promise for my boat if it could be mounted vertically.

The bilge on hull 14 has dividers that do NOT go all the way to the bottom of the sump. I believe the Whale supersub will fit underneath, and the orientation of the hose port can be vertical.

Ah ok now I understand on #80 they go to the bottom. Maybe I have a J91 or J93?   ;-)

Interesting.  #44 also has the stringers that stop before the bottom of the bilge.  Wonder if this was changed to help stiffen up the stump?

Todd, I looked at that pump when I was buying but it looked too long to actually sit flat in the bilge. I figured it would have to rest on the keel bolts leaving water under it.  I also wasn't sure I had the space to swing it horizontal with the stringers in the way.  If you think it would swing in there, I think it looks like a fine pump - personally like that the motor is in contact with the water to help with heat rather than the other designs of the motors being on top with air cooling only.  If you go with it, let us know how fitment goes

In the end, like Andy, I need something just to keep the boat dry should something fail. Last season I had a small twig get lodged in the shaft thru hole which pushed the dripless seal to leak a little. Came back 3 days later to a boat with water 3" above the floor boards.  So just need something to help keep things dry even if it leaves some water down there
