In Gujarati, ખપાટ (rather than ખાપટ) is the generic name for Abutilon spp. The latter is closer to the Kachchhi name ખાપટો.

A. persicum is distinguished as ખાજવણી ખપાટ. It has been documented by Jayakrishna Indraji Thakar in his treatise વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર (published in 1910). He deduced that this epithet is indicative of the itchy sensation caused by the viscid secretion of the gland-tipped hairs in this species.

Best wishes, Viplav

Thanks very much Viplav ji; I will revise my notes with the name ખપાટ
I had gone with ખાપટ for "khapat" suggested by one of my facebook contact.
Please do let me know if ખાપટ is not at all related to Abutilon.

Regards.

In my experience, I have heard it spoken of as ખપાટ. The word ખાપટ reminds me of the Kachchhi name ખાપટો for Abutilon spp. At the moment, I am not aware of any plant that is known as ખાપટ per se in Gujarati.

In his treatise વનસ્પતિશાસ્ત્ર (1910), Jayakrishna Indraji Thakar has delved into the etymology of the generic name ખપાટ for Abutilon spp. He deduced that it is seemingly indicative of the fruit that appears to be sawn into distinctly ridged segments (mericarps), each reminiscent of a wooden cleft/splint (known as ખપાટિયું in Gujarati).

Best wishes, Viplav
