Short explanation & request: The hexayurt I built in Asheville, NC can't be transported to Burning Man. I'll need to build another in Reno. (Or San Fransisco) Complicating factor: I won't have a vehicle to lug material from the harware store to a build site.

Alternative request: Does anyone in Reno (Or San Fransisco) have a hexayurt I can buy or rent for Burning Man?

More fun explanation & request:

Greetings & salutations from Asheville, NC. Home of delicious beer, tree-covered mountains, and a large freak community.

I find myself in an embarrassing hexayurt emergency. Embarrassing because I thought I had planned for every contingency, only to find myself begging to strangers for help at the last minute.

Here is the situation: 2011 was my first burn. I _loved_ the hexayurts, and resolved to bring one with me to the playa in 2012.

Within six weeks of retuning home I built my first Hexayurt with this group's help. Here is a gratuitous link to pictures of my structure, which, incidentally, won the 2011 "Most Creative Campsite at LEAF" award. ( http://imgur.com/a/lBwCC )

I rented truck-space to transport this beautiful yurt across-country; sadly I have just been informed this is no longer possible. (The story about what happened to the truck is complex, and I don't want to go into it. Suffice it to say that you should never trust hippies with large machinery.)

I can't find an alternative way to bring the yurt out west this late in the game. Besides, I'm flying out to San Fransisco to help build infrastructure for Sacred Spaces Village in four days. I simply have too much on my plate to search for another truck.

As best I can tell, there are two solutions:

1) Build another Yurt in Reno, then have it transported to the playa from there. This, of course, opens a host of other problems: Where will I find the materials? Where will I find a covered area to build the structure? How will I transport materials to the build-site?

2) Buy a hexayurt in Reno or San Fransisco. (Preferred option)

Any advice, help, direction will be greatly appreciated & add to your positive karma.

Some bugger needs to do a commerial run, that's at least five.

1. "Hexayurt in Reno" sounds like the seed of a song.  But this doesn't help you much directly.

2.  A materials run from the Playa, with a covered structure to build Hexayurts in on the Playa, would solve a lot of problems.  Maybe a quad-dome or other larger stretch yurt would suffice?   [alert the Reno supply place to have enough materials on hand?]

This would be an emergency yurt building collaboration, with you being the first emergency.  This could also turn into a "yurt storage for next year" solution.

PS: Use the large machinery hippies for large machinery!

At least "5" that need to build a yurt in Reno?

Possible Solutions:
Call The Salvagery in Reno - Burn Wall Street is leaving the building for the playa & it's huge
One of the 5 should have a car for supply runs. If not, rent one for the five of you.
Rent a truck to bring yurts to BRC & truck it back to Reno & get a rideshare back.

For Exodus: Find space in friends trucks or trailers. I am camping in Illumination Village and have space to take one or two yurts BACK to NorCal (Lake County 2 hrs north of SF) AFTER the burn.

Peace, )(hoenix

One HY takes up 4x8x1. Two will take 4x8x2.

The rest is small or squishable: rope, rebar, tarp, etc.

I'm heading out to the playa on the 18th. I live in Reno and I was planning on building a hexayurt next week (if I get my shit together). I have a full size truck I'm taking out there. I'm up for if u wanna build one here and I can help transport it out. Not sure how much room 2 yurts would take up. I may have a possibility of borrowing a small utility trailer. When are you headed to the playa and what days would you have available to work on it?

hmmmm

I put one H12 & one H15 into my 4 x 8 trailer along with 3 or 4 sheets 1/2" ply. Fit nice & snugly with just enough room for a milk carton to keep it all from shifting! The back gate wouldn't fit back in, but a couple strong truck hitches & some buffering materials kept everything tight & safe.

With regards to what your dimensions might be:

The thickness (or height of the yurt panel tarped sandwich) or dimensions you will have will depend on how thick your panels are, and how many panels you use for your design.

My H13 had thirteen 1" thick panels.  Add double filament taped hinges and you start to push past 13".  Add two 1/2" plywood (4'x8') boards wrapped in a tarp and you're probably getting between 15" and 16" realistically.  Put that on a roof rack and it's sitting even higher off the top of the car (assuming you end up shipping it that way).

Building a yurt in Reno will be a bitch logistically.  Your first task would be to check to see if Home Despot has the materials you need because if they don't, then this option becomes bogus. But, if they do have materials, maybe you can convince them to allow you to use a corner of one of their warehouses or something to build it in.  Wouldn't hurt to ask. All you need to do is cut some polyiso panels and tape the hinges, that's all you're doing. I waited till I got to the playa to make a window in my yurt, however that resulted in more moop there than at home where I built it.  It looks like there are 3 HD stores in Reno (and there are other cities nearby as well, i.e. Sparks).  I would think between the 3 of them, even at this late hour, you'd be able to find what you need.

  • (775) 787-9690 5125 Summit Ridge Court Reno NV
  • (775) 674-2900  2955 Northtowne Lane  Reno NV

  • (775) 851-9600 6590 South Virginia St Reno NV

At this late in the game, it'll be hard to find a yurt this late to buy or rent.  I sold mine as far back as March.  So even though that's the preferred option, I'd say it's less likely than finding yurt materials at Home Despot right now.

Some of you may cringe at the thought but, seeing how close BM is now, I'd say you may have to consider other alternatives. If you can't make getting materials and building the yurt happen in Reno, I'd look at cheap RV prices right now.  I saw a winnebago (that ran!) the other day and sold for $300 on craigslist.  Granted it had a leaky tranny and it was from the 60's but so what at that price!  Another one just sold for $850 in the last couple days here in the bay area. Go in on a i.e. $1000 RV between 4 people, do the math.

You can find several on CL for under $1000 right now, and plenty for under $5000, even less than $3000. Granted that may be out of your budget but, if you go in on it with several other people from i.e. your Sacred Spaces crew, it might turn out to be the best way to go. If you do look at this option, I'd look at including Sacramento as well as Reno (even the bay area) in your RV/trailer search.

And I'm willing to bet you're not the only person in your predicament within your circle of BM contacts.  Likewise there are cheap trailers for sale as well on CL.  Even if you have a small car, slap a trailer hitch on your car and that becomes a doable option as long as the trailer is a small one.  Speaking of your Sacred Spaces crew, I'd be talking to them right now as well to see what options/assistance/solutions they might offer you.  It's not what you know, it's who you know.

Or rent a pickup with a trailer hitch in Reno and then you don't have to worry about the size of the trailer.  Or find a friend who already has a trailer hitch who's in your predicament as well.

If it's too late to make the yurt happen, there are lots of options still, you just have to be open to them and willing to make them happen.

Good luck.

right! The H12 was 1" & H15 1 1/2" accounting for increased width.

This isn't directly a hexayurt question, but I was wondering if anyone does any imaging of the Burning Man Event from orbit?  Like a Google earth view of Burning Man "live", that would be an interesting way to check out the hexyurts.

Also check out Google maps, Black Rock City, and you can see 2011 and all the fun things people did as the satellite flew over (water trucks wrote the word Tribe, people created human chain hearts and initials, etc.  This year's satellite photograph will be taken from space at 11:45:40.

Do we have counts from previous years?
I've been wondering if a camera from a baloon or kite would be too intrusive on privacy. Maybe at night and only very vertical pictures?
This year there may be smaller yurts, colored ones, etc. Harder to count, but such is the nature of epidemics. ;-)

Paul,
I was trying to accomplish the same goal, a hexa-yurt to purchase/rent for Bman 2012.
I gave up after being scolded by a monitor for the site, saying that this is not a commercial site.
Not 2 weeks later a hexa-yurt was sold on the site.
So I think you are in the right place and I hope it works out for you.
I kinda feel like I have paved the way for you.
You can find what you need to build at the BigBoxStore, except the tape. You need to source the tape.
I have seen many rolls sold here on the site as well. So much for not being commercial:)
That being said Vinay, Julie and the gang are great people, Im sure something will work out for you.
Where will Sacred Spaces Village be this year?

All the best,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Feel like I've seen that post... Unfortunately it seems that the site most relevant for concentrating this information is most often the first place people get turned away from / turned off from. :-/

Less info on Reddit at the moment, but it'd be a great way to run a site like ------. Vote up the good stuff, vote down the bad.

But hey, what do I know? LOL.

Hope you have a better experience with the ------ site next time.
