Hi Everyone

I'm new to hexayurts and am hoping to build one at this years Burning
Man. After hours and hours or reading on the subject I'm a bit lost as
to what material I'm supposed to build the hexayurt out of as it seems
Tuff-R is now not recommended and Therma HD either isn't available or
is too expensive.
I just discovered Perma 'R' boards at Lowes which seem to tick all the
boxes with spec and price. However, there is no info re fire rating. I
will call the company on Monday to ask them but thought I'd ask you
guys if you had any info or this product:
http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=15358-23946-78910&langId=1&storeId=10151&productId=3014195&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Alternatively, if anyone else can suggest a good alternative to use it
would be most appreciated. I'm based in the UK so researching this
stuff from here is not as easy as being based in the States. I'm
departing from LA so ideally any material suggestions in that area.

Many thanks and look forward to joining the club and seeing you all on
the playa.

hi jamie,

I too have been researching hexayurts since its my first year build too.

I've looked at lowes and they do have the perma R but its  made from polystyrene ( see material specs on their site ) which most do not recommend since its flimsy and can break somewhat easily. it is however 10 bucks a sheet.  the thermax and Rmax ( which I found yesterday at homedepot.com ) is made from rigid polyisocyanurate foam.
so the bottom line is foam not polystyrene for a solid yurt. however as I found out the 1 inch is 19 bucks a sheet and the polystyrene is 10 bucks. also the poly ican be a moop issue on the playa

Its my first year 2 and we don't have a home depot near by. I went a head and bought perma R at lowes But now am starting 2 regret the decision bc of the strength factor. Do u think we should return it and start over? We can get 2 a home depot but there r all at least 2-3 hours away. Other wise I was thinking we could strengthen it by adding a board on the back. Any feedback would b much appreciated! Thanks eva.

hi eva,

the polystyrene filled perma r seems much more flimsy and breakable than the foam. ( not good in wind)  i checked both and read a few posts on this in teh hexayurt appropedia site and then looked at the Rmax foam at the h depot, the difference is pretty big. the r max is much more rigid and stronger. I'd return it myself.

I'm picking up my rmax at home depot in salt lake city, ( I'm coming from austin) doing a prebuild there, and then going to b rock.
you can buy the rmax by calling a store ahead and picking up on the road which I have done. something to consider.

also do the mini model build they suggest with some foamcore board before assembling the whole deal. this was well worth the time for me as a pre education. all the notes I've seen say do as much preplanning before getting to the playa as poss. the hexayurt site has all the specs videos and info. also its likely with the poly boards you may only get one years usage out of them so you may end up paying the extra anyway.

just my opinions

We decided the same thing when we got to HD.  If I can break it just by me leaning on it, it's not strong enough for playa wind, was my thought.  Changed our minds right then and there and got the $15 Rmax "fiberglass + rigid foam covered in heavy duty aluminum" panels vs $8 PermaR "styrofoam covered with window tint film" type panels.  It will be worth it in the long run.

Watch yourself on the rEEEally fine pokey fiberglass bits sticking out of the edges (till you get it taped).  I've got pretty thin skin on my hands and I got a piece right in my thumb.  I wore gloves after that and it was fine.  OH, and if you do get a piece in your skin, you can gently press some Gorilla Tape to the area you think it is (cuz you can hardly see it) and pull it off gently.  There's probably other ways but this worked for mine on the second try, after trying uselessly to get it out with my fingernails.
