The Robots & Humans event was worth going to. It included two presentations: the first demonstrating some very compelling work, one project in particular with an arm 'reacting' to a bottle of water being thrown toward it while 'predicting' it's trajectory and the arm was able to catch the bottle successfully, with 100% accuracy once the system had been optimized. That particular system was using infrared sensors in a limited area to 'see' the bottle, and the demonstration proved the concept very well. The second presentation was by the head of the AI Lab at Stanford, and demonstrated some history of robotics and pointed out that robotics has made particularly impressive progress in just the last 10-15 years. There was also a robotic bartender: no kidding, a guy with a mohawk created a machine that will create a martini for you automatically. I'll post a link to the event video if and when it's posted.
