Hey all,

Tamsyn, Pix and I are getting some of these. If anyone else is interested just let me know how many you want & I'll add yours to the order.

A question from someone who hasn't dipped toes in the Arduino pool (yet)...
Can these things power down to microamps current-draw, then power up a determined time later, do something, then go to sleep again?

Ken.

Put me down for 2 please :)

Some info on sleeping an Arduino for long term use:

http://interface.khm.de/index.php/lab/experiments/sleep_watchdog_battery/

Although it's more to do with playing around with AVRs than Arduino in
my opinion.

I'll take two as well, Fee.

I think these devices may be useful for low power applications since
they do not have an external FTDI. Bypassing the voltage regulator
would mean the only device on the board drawing power should be the uC.
The AVR chip I'm looking at (ATMega 16u4 as used in the leonardo) also
has the facility to shutdown IO sections that are not in use - further
reducing current draw.

Great, thanks all.

I'll wait til tomorrow in case anyone else wants to wade in. You can always change your pledge anyway, but I'd rather get it done than forget about it.

IIRC this came up at the arduino miniconf.

From (hazy) memory
- the chip can do it
- the wiring library can't (i.e. you'd have to add low level code)
- most boards aren't designed for ultra-low current when idle so you
may not gain much

Oh, and +2 for me please!

AVRs can draw less than 1 µA in the powersave modes, but require certain interrupts to wake them up (timer2, watchdog, pin change).  Although you can register interrupts with the Arduino libraries, I don’t think it has a nice way to configure the sleep mode.  I suspect the Arduino millis() function uses a busy-wait loop, so you won’t save any power with that.  If you can run the AVR at 1MHz and convince the Arduino libraries to produce code for that clock frequency, the datasheet says the AVR should draw 0.5mA.

Hey guys, good news:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digistump/digispark-the-tiny-arduino-enabled-usb-dev-board/posts

There's been an update now that they've reached their goals.  If you are holding off because you think we've hit our goal, then let it be known that we can add a few more digisparks to our order for $8 each.

Also (even if you're not going to get the digispark - depending on numbers) there are a bunch of very cheap shields.  Woo!

Only just been added in the latest update Fee:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digistump/digispark-the-tiny-arduino-enabled-usb-dev-board/posts

I am going to get 2 through hole pcbs (@ $1.75 each (unless they hit the next stretch goal @ 75 grand, which they probably will - in which case they'll be $1.25)
+ a RGB shield kit @ $2

So far I owe you $31.30 ($8.60 x 3 + $5.50 for the shields).

I love the 'low power' feature, a marked area on the PCB to mutilate
with a Stanley knife to disable the LED's and save power.

They don't go into much about their Ardiuno code.  I'm guessing this board runs V-USB, which is a firmware-only USB library for AVRs.  For the Tiny85, the clock runs at 16.5MHz instead of 16MHz, so they must have made some changes.  They might have added some extra code to put the chip in low power mode.

Thought I'd take up Ken's suggestion and make a shared Gdoc spreadsheet that everybody can put their request into:

Hopefully I set it up right and you can all access it.

When you open it, you should be able to figure out what to do :)

Jamie Mackenzie

Yeh, I thought that might be the case.  How about this...

If num_digisparc < 25:
    Add 60c to everybody's cost
else:
Ammend the unit cost of the digisparc to spread the cost evenly (once you know the total number of digisparcs)

Tamsyn Michael

That sounds fair.  Your way makes it easier for poor Fee anyway, who probably didn't know what she was letting herself in for.  The shields are a new thing - only just added.  If only they weren't so damn cheap!

Jamie Mackenzie

I went through the email trail and added people's requests to the gdoc sheet.

We were at 26 digisparcs so I changed their individual price to $8.60.  Whoever makes the order can claim the extra 60c as their prize :)

Have not heard any more from Jon or Tim so they may still wish to add some shields to their order.

Tamsyn Michael

Especially now the shields are 50c cheaper each.  Woot!  Digistump have hit their $75 000 push goal (actually 76 200 due to the price of the shields dropping back).
