Hello GWD Community!

I’m happy to announce today that Google Web Designer is now available and supported on four different versions of Linux.

This includes the following versions:

  • Ubuntu

  • Debian

  • OpenSUSE

  • Fedora

We are still in Beta but would love any feedback both on the Linux implementation and the products core feature set.  There are a lot of important changes coming soon but please try out the Beta version and give us your thoughts.

Along with Linux support, we also have a few fixes related to the gallery and map components, as well as the installer for Windows 8.

Check out the release notes here: http://goo.gl/nqHDIh and download GWD here: http://goo.gl/StQLvM

Cheers,

Sean Kranzberg

Great! thanks a lot!
After a quick test on Ubuntu 14.04 with Unity:
I noticed trouble maximizing the window, it will maximize only horizontally and forcing it with CTRL+ALT+5(KP) will maximize but making the menubar disappear, closing and relaunching GWD will launch it correctly maximized and with visible menubar
Someone can confirm this?

For me, it just doesn't open. xD

Well, it a window opens, sets the title, icon, size,
but it just stays blank forever. Doesn't respond to
any events (mouse or keyboard). I can close the window,
the process terminates.

I'm using Elementary OS (based on Ubuntu 12.10).

I'm having the same problem as jmen: it launches and opens a window, but then stays blank. I can close the window to terminate.

I'm running Linux Mint 16 with Cinnamon.

Yeah, I can see how it opens HTTPS to google when started.
I can open developer tools and inspect things away, requests
are made, but the window remains black. Completely.

My console:

Guys I found it, that last TypeError was the problem.

It seems you have a locale (i.e. language setting) that is not supported by Google Web Designer (yet). To fix, open terminal and type exactly:

rm -r .local/share/google-web-designer

Then, to run GWD:

LANGUAGE=en_US google-webdesigner

It will be started in english, you can now start it as normal.

Having a great first experience here, it works smooth and already is in pt-br with just some words "cropped" by small buttons area.
The integration with ubuntu is fine, but I realize that the menu bar would safe space if it was in the window bar as native software.
The software by itself is powerful and has an interesting merge of code and design.

I truly appreciate Google's initiative with Linux and its users.

Just clear the data as said above, and start GWD with a locale it's not translated to, like ca_ES:

  LANGUAGE=ca_ES google-webdesigner

It'll start black and you'll see the TypeError.

Just for info, I made a PKGBUILD for Archlinux yesterday. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/google-webdesigner/

It seems to be working just fine.

I am getting some sandbox-related message in console:

ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.
[0423/081918:ERROR:sandbox_linux.cc(142)] InitializeSandbox() called with multiple threads in process gpu-process

I am not sure if it cases any problems yet.

In my case, the URLs are found and give 200, but when browsed, they shortly redirect me to the 404 page.
Check it with the first, for example (curl -i https://www.gstatic.com/ninja/beta/04162014/gwd.html).

Andy, please turn on verbose-logging, launch GWD and send us (gwd-s...@google.com) the browser.log and zygote.log in the ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/logs

Please open for edit /.local/share/google-web-designer/preferences/settings.conf

add verbose-logging and set it to true

The 404 error is expected.  We prevent the gwd.html to be opened in the browser since it should only be accessed from the shell.

Thanks,
San

Hi smok...,

this is due to a bug in GWD, a fix will be released shortly.
Meanwhile, you should use the workaround in https://groups.google.com/d/topic/gwdbeta/BkeNfWyWATo/discussion to run GWD.

I don't think it's because of Kubuntu as it's based on Ubuntu (just like Linux Mint
or Elementary OS). It should work regardless.

I'm thinking, maybe it's because of the proxy settings.

I can't get to see the bottom part of the window, I have changed the settings.conf file fullscreen to true and nothing happens, also changed top and left to 0 and the program keeps showing aprox 30px from the screen top.

Is there a way to get the program to run fullscreen?

Andy, if you're using proxy, would you please try this and let us know how it's working out for you?

Please try the following proxy settings for GWD, for Linux, the file that you can edit is at ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/preferences/settings.conf

We'll update this help doc to add the file path for Linux.

I've solved the language issue as suggested in this forum, and it's working fine on elementary OS "luna" (Ubuntu 12.04) BUT. i have a widescreen HP envy 4 1130 LA and the window of the software it's not widescreen and it dosen't adapt to my screen and there is no option to resize it. I can't see part of the options on the menu. My screen is 1366 x 768. Great tools! Thanks for caring for Linux! We are still waiting for a Drive Client tought.

I had the same issue at home, where there is no proxy. At work there is a proxy, but it isn't the type where we have to put proxy settings in our browser. Curl has no problem getting http://www.gstatic.com/ninja/config/shell_config.xml .

Kubuntu vs. Ubuntu shouldn't matter unless there is a Gnome package this is missing. This seems unlikely since I'm using some Gnome applications.

Through a combination of using /usr/bin/strings and guessing I managed to get verbose logging. Turns out you need to add a "[Settings]" section.

Kudos for the linux version. Unfortunately no joy here. I downloaded the 64 bit deb for my kubuntu 14.04 desktop. It installed fine, no dependency issues, but when I start it, I see only a totally inert white rectangle. The only action that I can take is to close it via the window manager, as there are no other options presented, and no application menu.

Kubuntu is ubuntu. Same kernel, same libs, same init system, just using a different desktop environment. Is there a specific desktop environment that must be up and running in order for this to work?

Greetings,

installed the app in openSuSE 13.1 64bits
Works fine, though first time it didn't show anything, just an open window in black color (dark theme, not really black). After a reboot (did some updates), it is running fine except for the window's height. I'm running it in a laptop, though I can change the width of the window, I cannot chnage the height of the app.
Looks fine, have to test it more and look for the tutorials.

I'm having the exact same symptoms as you do, on: Debian 3.13.10-1 (2014-04-15) x86_64, running KDE with en_US.UTF-8 locale set.

I'm having no problems downloading the shell_config file manually, as well and I'm not connecting via proxy.

Is there any additional info for me to provide?

I guess either "Debian" on the supported systems list means "Debian with GNOME" (just as "Ubuntu" does not mean "Kubuntu") or there's an issue somewhere that once resolved would help both of us.

Hi there,

after a quick look at the Webdesigner using Fedora 20 (Kernel 3.13.10-200.fc20.x86_64) with Gnome 3.10.4, everything seems to work fine except of fact, that I'm completely unable to maximize the window.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any hints?

Best,
Benny

Failed to run on Debian 7 Wheezy. It just starts and shows just the window without anything in it. It's more like the skeleton of the window. So what's the solution for Debian Wheezy?

Not work in Kubuntu 12.04

1. Installing /home/.../google-webdesigner_current_amd64.deb
<skip>
/var/lib/dpkg/info/google-webdesigner.postinst: 41: /var/lib/dpkg/info/google-webdesigner.postinst: update-desktop-database: not found

2. after:
google-webdesigner
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

3. after install canberra-gtk-module just empty window.

I have downloaded it today and was excited to see Google has launched "Google Web Designer". After doing some practice with it I realize something is not happening here. When I edited the HTML file and creating CSS file, design view not showing the effect I have done. When I Preview it on Google Chrome or firefox only that time it is showing the effect on browser. But nothing happens on its own window. What is the problem on this application. Please help.

Got a problem with fedora 20, 64 bit. Installing .rpm with yum and starting produces:

google-webdesigner: error while loading shared libraries: libXtst.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Searching show similar errors occur with google earth, seems to be multiarch problem with 32 bit.

Suggestions ?

Hi All,

We've just released a fix for the black screen issue on GWD supported versions. Please take a look at our release notes for more information.

Note:

If the problem persists, close Google Web Designer, delete the following folder, and relaunch:

  • Windows: HD:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Google Web Designer\data\cache(note: you need to enable “Show hidden files, folders, and drives” in Folder options View tab)
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/google-web-designer/data/cache
  • Mac: /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/Google/Web Designer/data/cache

thx!
jaz
