Can't get sound to work with growl 2.0. Should I go back to 1.3?

I use growl primarily to notify when my macbook is unplugged. This worked with 1.3, but now that I upgraded to MLion I thought I'd "upgrade" to 2.0. This seems to have been a big mistake as I can't for the life of me associate a sound with a notification like I could with 1.3.

How the heck do I get sound to work?! I expected a popup of some kind to appear when I selected "sound action", but I guess that would have been too obvious?

Go to Displays and there are sound actions there. You can have multiple sound actions by adding multiple SoundAction configurations. It should be pretty straight forward.

What part are you having problems with? Also, drop the capslock and just tell us what you're doing.

When I select an event for an application, how do I set the sound it makes? I used to have a pop-up of sounds I could use, now I have nothing.

If you want some super-magic better way with plug-ins (????) for super-users, fine, but don't punish the rest of us. Restore the simple pop-up for sounds for Each Event, or at least tell me the baby steps on how to do this. Just as I asked.

So I'm not sure what's not obvious about this, which is why I was asking so that we can make this better.anyhow.

1) Go to the displays tab.

2) Click on SoundAction

3) Choose the sound you want.

4) Change the volume if you need to.

5) Click preview if need be.

6) Go to the applications tab.

7) Go to the application you want.

8) On the Actions drop down, select the soundaction that you just configured.

Hope this helps.

Chris

I think "what we have here... is a failure to communicate" LOL! Maybe simply a GUI issue.

First, following your exact steps below does work, at least for the one app I used in the process. However...
I had never even tried adding a sound to any app or its notifications so I had no idea of the steps involved. But I must respectfully say, the steps are anything but intuitive. When one visits either the "Application" or the "Notifications" tab in the "Applications" section, there is an "Actions" popup list. One of the choices is, of course, "SoundAction." I suspect that this is the choice and the location many people are going to and not seeing any sounds added. At least, in my first attempts, that is where I went and found it frustrating that nothing seemed to change.

Not until I re-read your instructions ("Go to the displays tab.") did I realize I was selecting the wrong "SoundAction" choice. DOH! "If all else fails, read the directions!"

The point is, the current Preferences have an identical choice ("SoundActions") in at least three separate places. However, the results of selecting that choice, is NOT identical. I can't offer a suggestion about what to put where and what to remove, but that is what I see as the basic reason for the questions about how to get sounds working.

BTW, no matter what choice(s) are made, the "Actions:" popup list label still says: "Actions" Even if "No Actions" was chosen. Perhaps Checkboxes would be more explanatory, even if requiring more window real estate?

Actually, the sound I had previously worked with (in steps 1 through 6) was instantly set and Previewed when "SoundAction" was selected. Of course, this is exactly the same 'label' that is seen in the "Application" and "Notifications" tab. There is not a list of available sounds at this point. Those are only available when in the "Display" section. In other words, your very well detailed instructions imply, at least to me, that there will be something showing the sound I just worked on when I get to step 8.

Hope this helps. It may just me that needs the help, however! LOL!

I must agree with xairbusdriver, and press even more.

Your interface is completely non-intuitive. I have been a human interface designer since 1972, and having so many settings in so many different places without any explanation is horrible design

1. Select the application or DEFAULT
2. Select the Event
3. Select the sound from Sound popup menu

If you want more than this, have an Expert mode.

95% of your users will only want simple stuff

We'd accept mockups for discussion, otherwise I don't see where this discussion is going to go much further than your summary here. Thanks for the feedback.

I reinstalled 2.0 (I had reverted to 1.2 out of frustration) and got through your maze.

I'm sorry to say this, but as an old-school Mac developer, this interface blows.

The old interface was more straightforward. You select the app, configure, click Notifications, select the sound to play. Notice everything is in one direction.

From the default configuration when I select SoundAction, nothing happens. I was expecting a sheet or something to pop up. The whole interface is also confusing because SoundAction doesn't say what sound it will play or that it has to be set. Also, you can't have more than one sound it seems. A more intelligible way to label this (if you wanted to keep this poor interface) would be to call it PlayDefaultSound. This would clue in the user that to play a different sound he needs to make another 'Action' like 'PlayMyUhohSound' which could then be created in the 'Displays' tab (although, again, this is confusing because why would 'Actions' be in the 'Displays' tab?)

The whole thing needs a rethink.

PS: There also appears to be a bug. After changing my default Action to Bark, my Unplugged action shows "Application Default" checked only (no SoundAction checked) and it still behaves as though only SoundAction is checked.

In 2.1, right now at least, once you select a sound it'll change the name of the sound action to that sound. The same is true of speech and the new script stuff.

You can add multiple sounds, add a configuration. You can also edit the name of an existing action. Double click on the name and put what you want in.

After 2.0.1 is out let us know if this is still a problem.

How about a User Manual with steps we can follow?

I still don't understand it at all.
