Growl preferences greyed out

Using Growl 1.3.2 (sic) on OS X 10.7.4:

Growl preferences always greyed out.  Cannot change anything.  Growl works as configured however.

Are you going into system preferences for Growl's configuration? If so, then I'm pretty sure that you're going to have to fix that up. This page has the steps:
