I just bought Growl 1.3 from the App Store, but so it seems to be hit
or miss in terms of app compatibility.
At time of writing, I've noticed it doesn't work with Spotify or
Sparrow. I tried going back to the old version and it works fine, but
whenever I switch to 1.3, neither app's notifications get through.

Spotify is definitely going to have to release an update, they
compiled the source directly into their app rather than include our
framework. If i had to guess i'd say they based it off our 1.2
framework. We have filed a ticket with them, but didn't get a reply.

Oh, okay. I figured it was something done wrong by the devs of the
apps that weren't working (since it works with some and not others).
Guess I'll have to stick with 1.2.x for now then, because I like
getting notifications for Spotify/Sparrow.
Out of curiosity, why don't apps designed for the older versions work?
I assume it's got something to do with moving from a PrefPane + Helper
App to just an App?

It has entirely that to do with it. Growl.framework 1.2 and below assume that Growl is a system prefpane. Growl.framework 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 (and 1.3) do not make this assumption.

This shouldn't affect a lot of applications since that framework is years upon years old.

Opera is not working either.  The strange part is that it is using Growl.framework 1.2.1.  Shouldn't that work?

Yes, it should. Is there any specific configuration change necessary in Opera?

I don't think so…  Nothing that I can find at least.  It worked fine before upgrading too.

Almost every apps doesn't work with Growl 1.3 (e.g. Sparrow, Dropbox, Firefox, 1Password, Transmission, and so on)

so, you suggest me to wait for an update again?
I have the 1.2 now, and I have speech troubles (i already talked
yesterday about that)
from Growl support I heard the 1.3 has been improved, regarding
speech; but I am not sure!

Found the same thing and can't get 1.2.2 working again. Now I am up
the creek without a paddle.

I think that it's better for you to stay on 1.2 and wait for a fix.

I've noticed the same thing.

Growl 1.3 doesn't work with any of my apps

There is no single fix; each application that is incompatible will have to fix its own compatibility. There is nothing, and never has been anything, that Growl can do about an application that isn't talking to it.
