So let's work on the NC switch first.

When you click it, exactly what happens?

I rely on Growl, so this is frustrating... especially since I paid for it.

Thanks for the video, that helps a lot actually.

Do you see anything in the Console application about Growl when you see that happening?

The switch bounces back to its original position.

It seems to happen to all the switches in the preferences, as witnessed in this SnagIt capture.

Hi,

Nothing at all shows up in Console when I try the slider switches.

On the other hand, I do see activity in Console when I modify the checkboxes on the Network tab.

BTW, before my initial post, I also deleted every .plist file with "growl" in the filename from ~/Library/Preferences.

That's changed since Growl is sandboxed. It's in ~/Library/Containers/com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp/Library/Preferences (I think, not at my desktop right now to double check)

Thanks,

I found it at: ~/Library/Containers/com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp/Data/Library/Preferences

I deleted the whole com.Growl.GrowlHelperApp directory. I also deleted the equivalent in the ~/Library/Caches directory, the Growl app and I re-downloaded it from the App Store.

The switches still don't stick, though the Growl app launched when I restarted my computer with the first run dialog. So maybe the switch is working but the UI isn't displaying the switch state properly?

It's difficult for me to tell, as I haven't been getting any notifications via Growl or Notification Center since I started troubleshooting this, and I certainly haven't seen any notifications from apps that use Growl.

Try it with a new user account and let's see what happens. :)

It works fine with a new user.

I wonder what's going on with my account?

Not that I'm aware of, but I'll restore the defaults and see what it does…

Ya I mean, that's what we're going to end up with here. A bunch of trial and error to figure it out.

I reset set the ACLs for my user directory. No change.

In spite of the load at system startup switch being stuck on off, Growl is loading, but I can't get it to send notifications to the Notification Center.

Next test:
I logged out and logged back in with the Shift key down to bypass my login items.

Sure enough, now the sliders work, but when I log back in normally, the sliders are stuck where I moved them to.

So until I figure out which login item is causing this, I guess I will have to bypass login items whenever I want to change Growl's high level behaviour (which won't be very often).

I haven't figured it out yet due to lack of time, BUT I discovered that the UI for Dashboard is afflicted with the same issue. I cannot add or delete widgets when my login items are loaded. The plus and minus buttons do not do anything.

However, if I login to my account with login items disabled via the Shift key, the Dashboard behaves normally.

I need time to test the various combinations of login items in order to isolate which one is driving the issue.

I remember using Conflict Catcher in the pre-OS X days to do this kind of thing.

Eureka!

I isolated the conflict. I discovered that the problem only occurs when I am running LaunchBar. When LaunchBar was running, I also had difficulty editing my client's CMS. AJAX Pop-up menus would flash and then disappear. In addition, I was unable to edit widgets in the Dashboard.

LaunchBar support at Objective Development asked me if I use a Wacom tablet. I don't usually, but after I connected the tablet and disabled Ink (Handwriting recognition), the problem went away.

So the issue seems to be isolated to a conflict between LaunchBar, handwriting recognition and certain UI elements.

Regards,
Rob

Wow that's nuts man. I'll definitely have to remember that scenario. Good work on narrowing it down.

I'm not sure why weatherhd says that, it'd probably be good for you to contact them about that.

Can you see if weatherhd is listed in Growl's applications tab?
