The second option talks about how to disable the update checker.

Growl 1.3.x does provide more features than Growl 1.2.2 did. But you aren't required to update to 1.3.x as that page says.

I agree with Dan.

As this was included out of the box this is a pretty shady Nag Ware tactic.

Everyone knows the opt in rule.  We shouldn't have to opt out of being whinged at by an app.
App spam is not acceptable.
