I really thought the per-applications screen would be fixed during a
complete rewrite. Double-clicking the application then having to click
the "back to list" button is just bad. It's confusing to new users and
completely unlike anything you'll find on the Mac. The back button
isn't even on the left side, which would vaguely imply what it does.
Why not show a list of apps on the left side, then the application
settings on the right side of the same pane? Show checkboxes to the
left of the app's icon to enable and disable. It might look funky with
full size icons (though no more than the current design) so the app
icons should probably be 16x16.

Ultimately it doesn't matter that much to me because I use preferences
once or twice a year, but when I do it's obviously lacking. Not a
problem with a free app that helped out so much, but now that it's
been rewritten and people are paying for it, they're going to expect a
decent UI.

You mean like this mockup?

That mockup looks significantly better.

We're going to work towards something like that, which is why this is 1.3 and not 2.0. :)

I understand that it's just 1.3 and not 2.0, but the fact that people
are paying and it's in the App Store basically negates the fact that
it's a small point release. Furthermore, everything I've read claimed
it's a complete rewrite. I'd figure if that crappy pref would ever be
fixed it would be during a complete rewrite.

The average consumer can't be faulted for expecting a lot more than
the same thing they were getting for free yesterday. The Rollup is
nice but it's not groundbreaking. Other than that it's essentially the
same version with a menu extra that can't be hidden and costs money.

I don't mean to be a downer, I love Growl and am happy to chip in for
development, but I think the AppStore version will fail to live up to
pretty much everyone's expectations. I already went back to 1.2.2,
though I look forward to watching the release notes. As soon as I can
hide the menu bar icon I'll be back on the latest version.

It wasn't a complete rewrite, that was a few websites taking liberties in their writing. We did completely redo things like networking, but that's not preferences. While I can understand your point, you need to understand that we're looking to redo most of Growl over the course of 5-6 versions, not in a single massive update. Do not expect the applications tab to change until 2.0. We still have 1.4 and 1.5 on the roadmap before then, and there may even be a 1.6. I'm laying this out so that you have your expectations corrected based on what we're doing here. We have a lot of work in order to get to anything close that's in the applications tab mockup you see there, so do not expect anything like this for about.. oh I'd say at least six months to a year. It could be shorter than that, it just depends on other priorities which we must tend to first. This is on our list for the interface redesign (which was not slated for this or any 1.x version), and we fully intend to make the applications tab better, we just need to also do it right and not rush it.
