No it shouldn't be this way. Can you check in your user's startup items and see if Growl or GrowlHelperApp are there? If they are, please remove them.

I checked the startup items and neither Growl nor GrowlHelperApp are included.

Neither Growl nor GrowlHelperApp are in the Login items list in my system preferences for this account.

No I don't have any other ideas at the moment. Do you have anything in the Console around the time?

Also, is this every time your laptop wakes from sleep, or every time your laptop is restarted?

It happens on every startup, not when waking up from sleep. I attached a copy of the console lines that included Growl in them during startup.

Alright, just making sure. Some people confuse the two.

We have an open ticket on Growl not starting up on startup, but nothing about the prefs showing up on startup. So I made this ticket, feel free to star it -  http://code.google.com/p/growl/issues/detail?id=500

I discovered that if I set the preferences to have the icon show up in the Menu Bar instead of the Dock the preferences pane does not come up when I startup the computer.
