I've seen this just a couple of times, and I'm not sure what really causes it. I hear my fans start spinning up because the processor is working hard and heating up. When I check Activity Monitor, Growl is using over 100% (two processors). When I click on the Growl icon in the Menubar, growl crashes and it appears to send a crash report.

Unfortunately this is something that we just didn't know about until after 1.3 came out. Basically it's a known issue. We tried fixing it for 1.4, but needed to submit Growl 1.4 to get other fixes out, so we're working on the solution here.

As soon as we have a fix and test it, we'll get it out. Luckily we have a lot more people who are testing for us now, so we're able to more easily hit more problems. Some of them run into this issue as well, so that's what our plan is to have them test it along with us. I do not have an ETA other than to say that our Lead Developer is working on this and only this problem until it is resolved.

I have the same thing on my iMac and 10.7.4 with 'brand new' version of Growl 1.4. It's STILL OVERLOAD CPU! Seriously, Growl's team people, it's kind a simple to start take money for you software, but obviously it's very difficult to make it appropriate for being payed. Shame on you.

Ya, I see your @growlmac tweets when you send them. I definitely know you're having this problem. Until we have something to test though, I don't have a better solution other than to load 1.2.2 until we have the problem fixed. I'm sorry, you folks are just running into something that

a) nobody ran into while testing 1.3

and b) we're having to rewrite large amounts of code to address.

Hi Chris,

I am having this issue and have to close Growl multiple times through the day, if there is anything I can do to test that would be great since this is very common on my system.

Thanks,

Shelby

I have used Growl for years and I haven't seen the CPU spike until I upgraded to 1.4. Just another data point...

What apps do you have running and any messages in the console?

I am experiencing the same issues with high CPU usage on Lion 10.7.4 and the latest Growl 1.4. I was a little discouraged when Growl went from free to paid, but I use it enough that I figured I would go ahead and buy it on the app store. That was back in Nov, 2011. Since then, I've had a lot of issues with Growl including constant update notices even though I already bought the latest. I have run the old version removal tool, re-installed from the app store, etc..

For the past several weeks I have noticed high fan noise on my 13" i5 Macbook Air. I started investigating it today and realized its Growl. I can't seem to reproduce things to make it happen, but it happens almost daily. I took two screen shots attached showing processor usage high and 24.3 watts of battery usage with Growl running vs. 8.9 immediately after closing it.

I hate to do it, but I think I'm just going to remove it until there is a fix. With Mt. Lion around the corner, I might not put it back on. I really liked Growl, it just seems like the past year has been full of issues.

This really isn't going to help unfortunately. The best workaround for now is to force quit Growl and then restart it until we get this issue resolved.

you should see how many connection are on port 23053 per each program.

This should help finding the culprit...

I am running 10.7.4 and Growl 1.4 and about once every couple weeks I find Growl CPU at 107%.

Is the lead developer still "working on this and only this problem?"

No since we're about to start beta testing Growl 2 which resolves this issue.
