I'm getting the same error.  I'm currently at 3.2 and just want to upgrade to 3.3.

Is there a work around?

In the App store does signing in help or log out of the account in the Mac App Store and then log back in?

I have the same problem, I've reinstalled osx completely (now on 10.7.4) and it only gives me the update function, giving me the above error message.

Growl is not installed anywhere. I also ran the growl uninstaller, but that made no difference. I've deleted ApplicationSupport/Growl, but still the only option is to update, which gives me that error.

I imported my account from the old drive, so it's still the same account I'm trying to use it on, but even had I not I should be able to install growl again.

Try using Growl Version Detective to see where Growl is on your system, that could perhaps help with things. GVD is available at http://growl.info/downloads

I had a similar problem when I wanted to update Growl in order to try to fix other problems with it.

I deleted all Growl related files using AppZapper as logging in and out didn't alleviate the problem.
AppZapping let me install from scratch using the App Store. Hope I don't have to do that again every time there's an update, though.

If you do then it's time to open something up with Apple on it.
