hi all,

after a flurry of activity and discussion in 2011, the rails rewrite has gone the way of many ambitious open-source side-projects and stalled (only three people that have made commits in 2012, and mine barely counts). therefore, i propose a challenge to us all! a deadline to drive us forward. january is often a relatively boring affair, given the nature of winter and post-holiday boredom, so i say we use it to get an alpha done. someone even made us a milestone as a bar to chase -- https://github.com/annaswims/GrinnellPlans/issues/milestones (nice work, whoever that was).

so, let's get after it. i have it on good authority that if we finish the milestone before month end, ian young will be so happy he will buy us all a beer*.

*: i doubt he will buy anyone a beer.

I will buy you all a beer, to be redeemed only in person, at any point in the next two decades.

Aww, Avram stole my joke. Fabricated secondhand non-promises of beer aside, I *am* very excited about this.

I'll be available to answer questions about anything and everything related to the project (or Ruby/Rails in general). If you're feeling hesitant, or something in the code confuses you, or something is broken, or you think something should be done a different way, or you're stuck on a bug - by all means just ask. You can ask here on the list, or hit me up directly. Email or Gchat both work well. Shoot me your questions at any time - I'll either get back to you right away, or if I'm busy or AFK I'll get back to you later. Don't worry about interrupting.

I'd much rather have you ask a question - no matter the question - than get discouraged and not contribute. Everyone got that? I'd love to help, especially if you're new to Rails.

Now, a couple things to help you get going. The readme (https://github.com/annaswims/GrinnellPlans#readme) gives some concise setup instructions. If you've used other Rails projects before, it's pretty standard stuff.

I've created some "bite-sized" tickets in the issue tracker: https://github.com/annaswims/GrinnellPlans/issues?labels=bite+sized&state=open. These are small tasks that are great for getting your bearings in the project. They'll help you dive into the code and have something ready to commit in an evening or so of work. If you're new to the project, pick one of those tasks and try it out. Once you're done and feeling more ambitious, we can wrangle up some bigger tasks to work on.

And remember, don't be afraid to ask for help/feedback.

Ian

Count me in! I have a little under a year of experience working in Rails professionally, and several more under a PHP environment. Since I work as a front end developer, I'm probably more suited to design and styles (as well as any javascript we need to write), but this is also a good opportunity for me to try my hand at the other side of the stack.
