Just to keep the information flowing for those that join later and those that could not be there on 8/26/2011, here are some highlights from the Labs Design Session:
  • We reviewed the progress made on the Building System Commissioning and the online controls graphics.
    • Field report is in Cx Design Center Wiki.
    • Commissioning Issues are on Google Docs so team can access.
    • Joe will translate to/from contractors using Doc and email to give specific direction for resolutions and who is responsible for the resolution.
    • Laurie will keep master copy of Cx Issues Log updated from Google Doc once they are resolved.
    • Schedule to be coordinated with Cochrane/Expert to complete their commissioning.
  • Blower Door Test
    • Ken will perform when systems and experiment design are ready.
    • Will use this as our "pilot" experiment to test and further develop the Labs approach.
    • Target for later September/October for actual testing.
    • Need to keep doors closed for test, so plan accordingly.
  • Labs Idea Bin - remember to put your ideas down here!
  • Intern Update - still working on description.
  • Lab Design
    • Started Labs One Earth Pattern development to develop identity further - see Wiki.
    • Scientific study to support sustainable stewardship of our Community and Earth. Seeking the truth of our actions and having fun doing it.
    • GGSL Communication Plan - defined media that will be used, purpose of each stream, and status of its development.
    • Twitter and FaceBook page have been started.
    • Labs will move to 1:30 p.m. by October (maybe mid-September).
    • Need Labs area on Main Page of Wiki with current happenings.
    • Need simple page with Labs diagram and current labs listed (Highlights Page).
    • Each lab/experiment needs to have a chief or champion identified (love what you do, do what you love) to make sure it remains viable and gets completed.
    • Need to limit the fall experiments to around 2 or 3 to get started.

Wonderful update....we look so organized!

Unfortunately I'll be taking my father to a medical appointment on Friday am.  At this point it looks like I'll be doing this once a month for the foreseeable future.

I'll look for the next update to stay abreast of the "Breaking News" from the Labs.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks, Tom. Glad the illusion of organization is still alive in the Labs! :-)

This will give us a chance to practice our virtual world Labs existence, which has a working title of "Second Labs", for the next couple of weeks. Or should we call it "Labsville"?  We'll have to do a quick poll and see what the geeks think.  If we don't have a chance to touch base after lunch Friday, I do have a couple of things that we may want to have a conversation on before I take off to the Yukon.

Please tell your dad "hi" from the Labs, and hope the medical profession is uncharacteristically on time for you guys tomorrow!

Thanks for the well wishes.

I'll be around on Tuesday if you want to talk...just call....or let me know a good time via email.

Also, I was thinking about the overall statement about the labs and have these two ideas:
  • While I believe "Scientific" is a good word...and accurate, I always think about if any word causes people to say that group's not for me.   I do believe there are many people who say "I'm not good at science."  This is because of our educational system's inability to show them that science is all around them everyday.   So I'd suggest substituting "Data-driven"  or "Fact-based" for "Scientific" to make it more inclusive.  Just a thought maybe we can talk about it when you get back from the frozen tundra.
  • To capture the exploration part of the mission...I've been thinking about the phrase "exploring the outer limits of sustainability."  I love the "outer limits" part.
Just some ideas.

Hope to talk before you hitch up the dogs to the sled.

Tom
