In the GQ queue page the queues are color coded... but when they come
up on the Gcalendar, they are only black in the right GQ task window
and only green when posted on the daily section on the Gcalendar....
it would be helpful to carry the GQ queue color coding over to the
calendar.
Thanks

As a simple workaround, I'm using three colors schemes, Gcalendar
has red tasks, blue events, and now I'm using GQs green events. the
major problem is that the Droid mobile task app is a stand along
app... so I don't see the Gcalendar/GQs events. But, when using the
computer I can visually discern between major projects with the
colors. Having GQ carry the queue colors to Gcalendar would be
wonderful.

Sorry, Doug, but this probably won't be happening anytime soon because it is a limitation of Google Calendar, which I have no control over.  GQueues uses the Google Calendar API to post events and sync events, but there is no way to set colors for individual events in the calendar.  Even interacting with Google Calendar itself you see that each calendar can only have one color.  If Google adds this functionality then I will certainly consider it.

Guess what? The Calendar API supports adding colors on individual events. Cameron, when you've got a few spare cycles amidst the mountain of amazing features you're working on, it would be nice to have the option to have colors show up on the Google Calendar.

The following support sending a 'colorId' attribute.

Assuming, of course, that you're already using v3, it shouldn't be too expensive to add the color to the hit, depending on how easy you can grab an Task's Queue Color.

Yes, the colorID was a nice addition to version 3 of the calendar API. Right now GQueues is still using version 2 (that was the latest version available when I first added calendar integration to GQueues).  Unfortunately converting to using version 3 is a non-trivial task, and since calendar integration is a core feature of GQueues I definitely want to take my time with it and make sure nothing gets messed up in the transition.  Right now the conversion is not a top priority compared to other work. But when I do change over to version 3 then yes, coloring GQueues tasks on the calendar to match their queue color would be a fairly simple option to add.

Hi Cameron,
Is there any update to moving to version 3 of the API and the ability to support colour coding in the Google calendar events?

Cheers,
Quinten

Hi Quinten -

Yes, GQueues actually moved to V3 of the Google Calendar API back in January 2014.

However, unfortunately, due to quota limitations from the API, we have not be able to rollout color-coded events for tasks.

Color coding would be extremely important. It's a pity it's not yet implemented.

Hey,

Can you provide a use case for this?

I use the calendar integration to roughly plan what I'm going to do each day of the week/month or see what I have on the next day before I go to bed. Generally, if I have >5 tasks on any one day that's typically a stress flag.

Yours hopefully

PS Disclaimer: prior to suffering a nervous breakdown I used to have my whole TODO list scheduled for the next day :1

I have different google calendars for different projects/areas of my life. Obviously, they have different colours. Since Gqueues has its own calendar, and cannot be synchronized with anything else, it would have been very useful if tasks and events of a given project had the same color.

Cameron,

Our business is exploring using G Queues and I can already see from the trial period that color coded queues in Gcalendar would be a game changer for us, do you have an updated timeline on if and when users might see this becoming a part of the API functionality?

Hi Andrew -

The Google Calendar API still has the same quota limitations in place, so we are not able to rollout this feature to GQueues users.  We don't know if / when the Google Calendar API will change these limitations, so I can't give any estimate on our part.  Sorry I don't have better news.

Hi Cameron,

Could you please elaborate on how the calendar API quotas interfere with setting colors for the events? I see from v3 APIs documentation that the color is just a part of REST call payload and does not affect the number of the REST calls. Aren't the request to Google APIs executed on behalf of each user anyway? This feature is important as it makes much easier to have a day overview. I would be ready to pay for such a feature.

Regards,
Alexander

Hi Alexander -

I understand the desire for tasks in the calendar to match the color in GQueues.

Here's the nitty gritty answer to your question:
Changing the color of an event in Google Calendar counts as 1 API call.  If the colors of all events matched the queue color in GQueues, then whenever a person changed the color of a queue (from red to blue for instance), then that would trigger an API call for EVERY task in that queue to update the color of the corresponding event in Google Calendar.  If a queue is quite old, it can have thousands of tasks in it (active and archived).  So with one click a user could trigger thousands of API calls.  If they spend a day choosing new colors for all of their queues, this adds up to a lot of API calls.  Multiply this by hundreds of thousands of GQueues users, and we would easily exceed our quota from Google (the quota is per app, not per user).  And unfortunately Google does not allow developers to purchase additional quota for Google Calendar at this point.  So that's the long answer.

When we introduce Team Queues down the road, each team will have their own calendar, which can have it's own color, so this may help a bit.

Hi Cameron,

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer! How many users would prefer the ability to change the color of a queue, comparing the ability to see event colors at all in google calendar? It would be great to allow the users choose if they want colors in google calendar at all or the ability to change the queues colors. IMO, such option could be nice subscription feature. This could be achieved by adding the color property only to POST requests used to create the events  (for new events only) and blocking the option to change the queue color when this feature is enabled.

Regards,
Alexander
