Map key

I see that now you have to put a key on the map but is required to use map ?  Now i don't have a key and map works . It's only for monitoring usage of map and see if you go over limits or is like version v2 api where is necessary for use ?

in v3 right now, its only for monitoring usage.

I dont know for sure, but Google might well block heavy usage without a key.
