Interesting, do you know what toolkit they use, it used to look quite ugly. I hope Wine isn't involved!

Nope like stated it's a native Linux version. :)

Wouldn't it be wonderful if such a version of Picasa were to be released ! I know, I know - I'm either dreaming or hallucinating, depending upon whether my eyes are closed or open, respectively....

+1 Henri. BTW neglected to mention to the previous poster that the toolchain used  looks like it's QT. Surprised actually, as I would've thought it might have been GTK.

Hi

I just installed it and it pulled in QT3, it crashed before long. It does look better than the old non-native version.

Yeah I've been reading on the intertubes that people are complaining about the ugly UI fonts etc., Yet on Debian vanilla testing it looks beautiful. Interestingly most of the folks I see complaining are using Ubuntu. So that's got to be a 1st -- An app looking better on Debian then Ubuntu. ;>P

I haven't had any crashes so far and I've been using for 2 days. Must be those bleeding edge distros causing the issues. ;)

On Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, no crashes on GoogleEarth so far,
but it really does have bad fonts.

From an inspection of the package, it appears to be using
QT as its library.

I agree, a native version of Picasa written in QT would
be ideal and address a lot of issues we have with it.
My Picasa on Fedora 16 crashes if I try to upload
pictures so I have been using the shutterfly upload
app (wine also) which seems to work quite nicely.
This is a serious compromise.

Amazing.....

I just started google-earth on my openSUSE 12.1 system to examine the font
appearance which had not drawn my attention previous. The look very good,
clear and distinctive. AND, I am currently away from my desktop ssh-ing
into it from a windows laptop over wireless.

The font problem must be a *buntu* problem.

I was advised that I was opening google-earth in opengl mode and suggested
directx would perform better, but directx mode crashes... opengl mode
displayed properly.

I'd be a lot happier if they'd make a plain ordinary tarball for us
slackware people. deb and rpm files are always problematical.

I'll stick with what I'm using until I have a GOOD reason to change.

Yeah stable 6.0 is a little stale for brand new software.

I'm on wheezy/sid. Occasionaly with newer software one needs to pick and choose necessary software from the fresher repositories.

It's a shame rich pakaging formats cause problems for those not using
the system they are made for. For people with the corresponding OS I
think they give a lot more benefit than a tarball.

Of course what we'd all really like is a tarball - of source.

I'm running version 6.2.0.5905 (beta) on Ubuntu 11.04 and have no complaints about the fonts. But then again, I may be sadly lacking in aessthetic sensibility....

Hmm... this is an old discussion but I just found it. Anyway, I use Ubuntu, currently 12.04 LTS -- which IMHO was a change in the wrong direction -- and yes, the GE I use *is* ugly. However, I think it's that non-native version someone referred to above that I installed back when I was using 10.04 so I haven't tried the "new" one you guys have been talking about. I guess I need to check it out. Thanks!
