I'm working with a client to propose using Google Apps as a replacement for their legacy collab environment.  They are excited about the prospect of migrating their existing email inboxes into Google Apps mail.  Is it possible to use the same API to migrate content to a Google Group?  Any cavets or limitations?

Hello Jeff,

Which content are you referring that you want to migrate to Google Group? Are you talking about groups migration? Please clarify.

The client uses OpenText's FirstClass collaboration system ... one of the central concepts of the software is the notion of a 'conference.'  The closest analog I can think of is a shared mailbox or a email list alias which maintains an archive of the content. (So that if a new user is added to the conference, they have access to all the previous messages posted in the past)

As an example: a message might be addressed to some_conference(at)example.org, which we might represent as a Google Group some_conference(at)gapps.example.org.  Would the email migration API be an appropriate avenue to import content?  If not, are there other possibilities?

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

The Email Migration API can't be used to migrate content into a Google Group, but your scenario is definitely worth considering, so I'll route your message to the PM to be treated as a feature request.
Thanks

Claudio

Hi,

If you are putting in a request to the update API to allow migrating
data into a Google Group, I'd like to request that there also be an
update to be able to migrate data out of the group. If we decide to
close a group, say for a project that is completed, and don't want the
group around anymore (No need to send emails there anymore), we would
like to be able to download the group content for archiving it
locally.

But to throw in my 2 cents for the question posed, when we migrated
over I used Mutt to "bounce" the emails from an IMAP shared folder
into the google group. This didn't work 100% because some
"contributors" aren't in the company anymore and so the group rejected
those emails. I suppose if I had adjusted the settings before hand it
could have worked, but it wasn't urgent and I was mostly just testing
it. Of course, everyone in that group (the email support team) then
got the emails that were "bounced" to the group as well, which was a
bit annoying.

Regards,
Andrew

Much appreciated, Claudio.  I recognize the feature might not be a high priority unto itself ... but IF it existed, it will make or break the difference of signing up 80+ Google Apps biz accounts <grin>

Thanks again for your help!

Thanks Jeff, for informing us the importance of this feature. It is indeed a high priority for us.
But it might take some time to get the feature.
