Hey all!

Do you know anything about the Occupy-Movement in Rio? What do they do? How radical are they? And how willing to talk?
We thought about somehow working with them...

But first, we need some local estimations.
What do you think? Could they somehow be useful to promoting our conference or blog?

Thanks for some feedback!

Hi guys!

Currently, I'm not in Rio, therefore I can not give you an actual report about the "occupy Rio" situation. Nevertheless, I've read about it in blogs and also at their own website (http://ocupario.org/). They're a extension of the "Occupy Wall Street" movement (http://occupywallst.org/), and they do peaceful demonstrations against some government issues, as well, they don't seem to be radicals. According to them, they are proposing a critical rupture with the financial system, and they look towards giving value to the individual political participation. They ask for a review of the public procedures and a smart investment in the public education. They put themselves as a free nonpartisan group with no leaders, where everybody is very welcome.

I think they're "reachable" to talk about any kind of help to their project, and now they're planning a big manifestation with people from occupy’s movements from the whole world during people’s Summit and Rio 20, and they seem totally focused in this plan.
They have almost 2.700 members at their facebook's page, and they're not only in rio, but also in São Paulo and other cities around the world. Some friends were telling me that they are very open to talk, and they could help us, as well they told me that they did a nice job last year, but that it was interrupted by police activities, where they did not reacted, what brought even more credibility to their work.

I'm still waiting to talk with some other friends that live in Rio, and which could give me a "local report" about the movement....

does anyone know something else?

best regards,

Flávio Bezerra

Occupy Rio had an encampment from October 2011 until December or
January in Praça Cinelândia. Not sure of the circumstances of its
dissolution. They are indeed promoting some activities at the
People's Summit of Rio +20 but not sure if it will involve a physical
encampment. Keep in mind that Occupy movements are decentralized and
work through an extremely participatory, democratic process of general
assemblies. I think any kind of formal involvement is unlikely, and
something like a Global Economic Summit, at least by its name, is the
kind of event they would protest rather than support.

As I said before, I wasn't in Rio when the movement happened, and with the Infos that I found in internet, I had at the same doubt about the occupy rio as you. :) Then I talked with some friends that are well informed about them, and they said that: they don't have any leaders, but they are working with what they call "Working Groups"(GTs) and each GT has a special function, e.g.: Communication, Arts, Security and etc.
I was also thinking that they could maybe be against the project, but nevertheless they look very open to talk and discuss, and that was what i meant when i said that maybe they could help, cause they could have interest about our topics... :)

best,

Flávio

We haven't even thought about how exactly we would want to work with them or get them involved. It is rather that we are thinking about some options how to communicate our summit action-oriented... :)
