Need Your Help In Restoring Gale 401C

Dear Members,

I need help from the Gale Audio Forum Members.  I am restoring 2 pair of Gale 401C.  One pair needs a pair of Peerless Midrange Speakers.  Does anyone know where I can find a pair of Peerless Midrange Speakers or could someone recommend a replacement for the Peerless Midrange that would be equal to or better than the Peerless?

When putting the speaker cloth back on the speaker there is a strip of rubber that holds the cloth to the speaker.  Can someone recommend where I can find these rubber strips or other rubber strips that could be made to work on the speakers?

I really would appreciate any members thoughts on the above.  Thanks so much for considering to help.

PS-  I have been trying to find out how to by pass the mid and high adjustments.  Wimslow Audio sent me a diagram how to use additional resistors to by pass the resistors.  I will be happy to share this information with the group if there is an interest.

Hi Greg,

 

The Peerless can be re-foamed, but if they are missing/irrepairable then your choice of substitute depends on whether you can install a midrange chamber, which opens up much wider possibilities, such as Vifa M11 or Seas equivalent paper cone mids.

Mark,

Thanks for the response. I have the chamber but not the original Peerless Midrange.  Will the Vifa M11 or Seas (do you know the model number of the Seas Midrange you would recommend) work with the chamber?  Do you have additional suggestions since I do have the chamber?

The Seas mid is the MCA11FC.  Paper cone, foam surround.

 

Both of these have ruler-flat responses, require just a small chamber and will perform really well.

 

Their chassis flanges differ from the K040MRF, so some woodwork will be required.

I search the Internet and eBay and was unable to find the Vifa or Seas you recommended. Could you recommend where I could find either of these speakers? Thanks again for your help.

Hi Greg,

MCA11FC is out of production. Try the following specs for another Seas paper driver. As per the other post saying you might have to do so woodwork to fill the spot taken by the old Peerless midrange.... you will have to do that too for this driver.

Also, I don't know if the 401C rubber strip (?) to hold the speaker cloth is quite the same as on the 401A, but this might work .... on my 401A I found the wires within cheap household electrical cable designed to go in-wall had the perfect diameter. Bust open the cable and get the black wire out... that is black insulation with wire within all intact. Lay the cloth over the groove, then lay the black wire on top of the cloth over the groove. Use a large washer and hammer the wire into the groove gently which pinches the cloth tightly into the groove ... worked for the 401A.

Thanks for the help.  I had seen the Seas paper driver at Madisound but did not know if they had the frequency range I needed since the Peerless had a higher range.

Hi Greg,

I have bought twice from this seller and he is a good one. Recently an HF2000 tweeter for a gale 401. It came well packed and as described so you should be able to buy with confidence. If you decide not to buy or you miss them, I have a couple of suggestions but would go for these personally.
