Hey everyone,

I am new to the group, though I have met a few of you, and I am really interested in finding a nice space to house some of the larger tools for those Hackers that do woodworking, metallurgy, Laser Beams, and whatever else you can think of....you know, a place to build your hovercraft. Anyway, a good friend of mine has a few leads in the downtown area for a good space, but if you are interested in looking or perhaps know of a possible space, I was wondering if we could use this thread for now as place to discuss what we have come up with, (unless there is one out there I missed, and please let me know if that is the case)

And then for those who have further interest, I suggest we meet before next week's meeting to discuss the various opportunities out there.

I talked with Ian at last night's meeting and he was saying the lease will be up sometime next month at the old space, so time is of the essence for at least finding a temporary place to house the stuff currently there.

I also understand that there is a lot of work that still needs to be done at the new downtown space, and I do not intend on taking anyone away from that or add more to anyone's plate.

Thanks a bunch and talk with ya'll soon,
-Tommy

Oh crap, I didn't realize the lease was up so soon. What are the locations you know of?

I am meeting with by buddy Chris tonight at the Bull at 9PM to discuss it some (anyone is welcome to join). I dont think anyone knows him at the Hackerspace, but he has a lot of interest in getting involved. He was saying that a few of the old GRU/City building are vacant in the GRU industrial park around the power plant. He was interested in trying to get the city to pay for a space like that. Other than that I have only seen a couple spaces around downtown that look promising but havnt investigated them yet. I'll get some addresses up in the next few days...

Yes; we don't have enough conversation in electronic forms. This
means that folks who can't get to the meeting of the [topic] cabal are
squoze out. We need less of that.

I'll see if Santa Fe can let us use some space on a temporary basis.

Get the most space for big machines.  You can't have enough room.  TX/RX was in 4,000 square feet.  We're moving into 15,000 square feet of building and another 8,000 square feet of fenced yard.  It's not impossibly hard to get your hands on a laser cutter as an individual, it's incredibly difficult to get access to a mill or an engine lathe or a plasma cutter, etc.  Machine tools can make a hackerspace AWESOME.

Tommy, thanks for starting this discussion! We'd definitely like to
find a nice warehouse space fairly close to our main location in the
Sun Center. I'm excited to see everyone's suggestions.

I was not able to make any progress with Santa Fe on getting access to their spaces downtown. Given the short time frame on the house lease, we should keep looking for other warehouse space.

I believe Christian is working on something, as well.

If it comes down to it, is there the possibility of paying an extra month or so on the lease at the old place?

Allen, are you on GroupMe?  I'm finding it to be a quicker and easier method of electronic communication with the rest of the hackerspace (at least the more involved members).

Hey all,

So I was thinking for those interested we can meet around the sofas and talk about possible spaces. There are a few around the depot park area which is close to downtown, and few random old buildings that seem empty (with probably have some issues) So I hope we can sit and talk about the kind of space we would like, the amount of room, power requirements, etc. I will take notes.

See ya tonight,
Tommy

So, what happened with that City Commissioner you guys met with?  Has anyone reached out to him for suggestions?

We should probably get this discussion going again. Do we have any kind of deadline to leave the old space?
