I'm trying to help the community in Chennai get together.
Mr. Mani has very graciously offered to have Chennai FUG at this
premises.
We would like to start having regular meetings (at least twice a
month).
It would be great if Flex programmers from Chennai, would join the
FUG.
Those interested please reply to this thread.

I have been traveling, hence late reply :)
We don't need anything special (fund, place etc) to start meeting, an
active meeting group is actual user-group. I am less bothered about
the official group... Passionate folks rather spend money from their
pocket to do things (coffee, snacks, tshirts etc) - watch Kathy
Sierra - creating passionate users :-)
An Active User Group is more important (than Adobe User group). Once
we are active, Adobe might choose us to list but I don't believe in
applying (anymore) without having anything and it doesn't make sense
to apply, if we are good we would be recognized but do we really need
to be :-)
BT! I have tried in past and it doesn't work and it's too much of
pressure (obligations of 1-2 meetings per month, website etc etc)
which we can't consistently take in our busy life (work + personal, if
any). We can manage to meet and do spend some quality time discussing
about Flex, related technologies and problems, that's more than
enough.
I talked to folks applied for AFUG, Ed Sullivan gave me details, I
have not heard from them after that. I would call them again, and if
you are in Pune, let's start meeting... We can start meeting in group
of 3-5 regularly at some place (my office, Cafe Coffee Day or
else-where).. The idea is to start with normal discussion (higher
level tech, competitors, socializing with each other etc) and later
get into more tech things...
We can do it slowly, because we all are busy and a consistent
light-weight meeting doesn't require much (time or effort)...
I would start a mail-thread to discuss the meeting plans of our first
meeting and I would also pull in other guys (who might not be on this
list).
BTW! There is BarCamp pune in June, we all can meet there and
speak/attend couple of sessions on Adobe Flex/Apollo. I am probably
going to speak on something, may be just basic but it's good
opportunity to let non-Flex guys know about Flex and if they like it,
they would develop using Flex..
Please let me know your suggestions f.ex:
How do you visualize these meetings?
What you expect?
How you think, it should be?
Sorry about little longer email, these are just my thoughts.
Thanks

For Pune folks, let's try to meet in Barcamp Pune also...

Just to clarify, there is no requirement to have 1-2 meetings per month
to be part of the Adobe User Group program. The basic requirement is
that each user group has a website that lists the group's basic
information and the dates of any upcoming events. Some user groups focus
more on online activity and have deep user group sites, active online
forums and regular online seminars. Other groups focus on regular face
to face meetings. Most groups have some combination of both. If your
group wants to have face to face meetings, remember that the more often
you meet, the easier it is for people to remember your group (say it's
the first Monday night of each month). This is one way to build momentum
around your user group.
Running a user group is definitely a commitment so I'd advise people in
a city who are considering making a user group to get together and talk
about it informally. Talk about what you hope to get out of running a
user group, talk about what you can contribute, how much time you can
spend on it, what skills you have to offer. Some user groups are run by
a group of people who share responsibilities for the user group. For
example, one person looks after the website, one person finds speakers
for the events, one person makes sure there are refreshments at the
meetings, one person focus on helping beginners to the technology, etc.
The roles in the user group could change every year to keep leaders from
getting bored in a particular role.
Here is an article I wrote about the Japan Flex User Group. This group
has a leader Satoshi Yokota and also a core group of leaders who assume
different roles in the group and cover for the others when they get busy
with a work project.

There are many different ways to run a user group. If you want to start
slowly and grow the user group and then later apply to join the Adobe
User Group program, that's fine too. In my opinion, the best way is the
way that results in the most fun for leaders and participants. If you
have any specific questions about the Adobe User Group program, feel
free to contact me.
Have a great day!
