Hi,

great to hear that!!!

The video is really attracting new people (and maybe taking fears away) - that's awesome!

Is it legal in your country to genetically engineer bacteria outside a lab?
If so, you bascially could do an experiment like this for a very small budget:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sovDqqhQJx8

Most expensive will be the micropipettes (you'll need 0,5-10 uL AND 10-100 uL, on ebay some 40 $ each)

Plasmids from carolina cost less than 10$ each. Here on themailing list someone may provide you also with the plasmids.

just looked up your contry, (it's called Estland in my native language)

There's a fair chance that it will be legal in your country because it's quite far away from central Europe (that's where the anti-GMO people*  are^^)

*actually it's the media who spread fears about gmo's and 90% of the people just belive it and don't inform theirselves independently.

Estonia is part of the EU, and therefore has proably implemented the EU
directive that called for GMO regulation according to the model used in
Austria, Ireland etc.

However, how strict they were in implementing it is another question. In
Ireland, an individual can clearly get a license: I did. I'm told in
Germany, that's all but impossible. The frameworks are the same, the
filler is different.

Of course you can incorporate; in fact it's a great facilitator
and in many cases gives you access to resources not available
to individuals.

I can't recall who did the research on this one, but it sounds like the
German law places responsibility on individuals even in case of
incorporation as a limited entity. That is, if you create a
biohackerspace and designate a member as the biosafety officer, that
member becomes wholly legally liable for any and all errors committed by
other members, even if the biohackerspace is incorporated etc.

I could be totally mis-recalling the facts on this one: it's likely to
be second-hand information from either Rudiger or Lisa..

If I could read German Legalese, I'd look it up to be more specific! :P

This is interesting to know, even if we don't plan to do any S1 work
at the moment.

I hope it's false, of course! There are too many awesome biohackers in
Germany for this kind of nonsense to get in the way..

Wow, thanks for all the great responses. I wasn't actually expecting to get any! I'll work my way towards that experiment, I guess that's really my best bet right now - just start off with these small relatively inexpensive things. I checked the DIYbio FAQ and found a nice introductory video as well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD5ZwMTi2rU) and some neat kitchen counter experiments to get me started. Got an old blender lying around so hello centrifuge :)

I'll also look into that event in Helsinki, it's relatively inexpensive to travel there. Thanks again!

Tere Priit,

I moved to Tallinn not so long time ago and I started few DIYBio projects. I can't help you with a lab space (long story...) but I can on the other side help you with advices and molecular biology tools (plasmids, strains...).
If you are interested you can mail me at sasvimlogicno@"gmail.com

Cheers, Srdjan
