Using .dsk files

Hello all,

I've recently been handed some .dsk files from a vendor who imaged some 5.25" and 3" floppies for us. I've never come across these files before (we've been using FTK Imager for our own imaging) - can anyone recommend software (Windows or Linux at a stretch) to open them? Presumably they need extracting to get to the actual files?

Honestly, it depends on the format of the disk that was imaged. Do you
have any information on this? Have you tried opening up the image in
FTK Imager?

"DSK" is not really a file format. There are multiple formats that use
this extension; some DSK files are really just raw sector images.

Thanks Mark,

I'm afraid I don't have any info of the format of the disk here, I think that might be part of the problem. I've tried opening in both FTK Imager and WinImage, but both present an error message along the lines that it's not a valid image format. But I heard back from the vendor and he's able to open the files in WinImage OK, so it looks like we're getting somewhere. This (i.e. raw sector imaging) is pretty new territory for me though, if anyone can point me in the direction of disk formatting for archivists it would be appreciated! :-)
