Tooling Up!!!

I'd like to compile a list of items that people would like to see on the Derby Makers' inventory.  A makerspace needs a set of tools and we already have a really great starting point because of the well appointed workshop out back.

Everyone wants access to different kinds of tools (and I'm talking about the big stuff - not small hand tools), so we'll have to prioritise the importance of each item on the "wish list" according to how much it is likely to cost versus how many people want it.

I'll suggest an initial starting list of items that I reckon would be of benefit to the makerspace.  Please make any suggestions you like...

Higher priority (short term) stuff

• Sewing machines (because we have a lot of folks interested in fabric based crafting)
• Knitting machine
• Multimeters (ditto electronics folks)
• Fix the metal-turning lathe in the workshop!
• Wood turning lathe + accessories
• Vacuum Former (actually this is something we could probable make ourselves!  Any volunteers?)

Middle priority stuff

• Laser cutter (you can make a heck of a lot of different things with one of these)
• Oscilloscope (4Ch DSO for preference)
• Some low-cost computers and *decent* monitors.
• Half-decent laser printer

Low priority (long term, pie in the sky) stuff

• 3D Printer (expensive, very high maintenance, but extremely cool)
• Band saw (dangerous, but who really needs fingers anyway?)
• CNC machine (and a whole bunch of metal stock to carve up)

Those are the things that immediately spring to my mind, please suggest as many things as you can think of and we can all get together to properly prioritise the stuff we want and also work out ways to get all the things!

We should get on with this soon though as we have this Rube Goldberg project (see other posts) to get into, and without any big tools to play with we'll be at a disadvantage.

Although I like to knit as you well know I am not interested in a knitting machine but maybe others are. I believe they are complicated and I think Nottingham may have one but not know how to use it. More than one sewing machine would be good though.

I have heard people say they would love to do screen printing and book binding but I have no idea what equipment you would need for these or how expensive it would be.

Personally, I'd like to see some photography type equipment, such as...

Wet area/trays for developing

Darkroom

Enlarger 

Studio lights (preferable roof mounted to save space)
(and if anyone could source a Phase One IQ160, I'd may put you on my Christmas card list!)

Also, some electronic PCB stuff might be useful (Etching bath, etc)

An idea occurs -- I wonder if the spray painting booth (out back in the workshop area) could be used as a photographic dark room?  Worth investigating I'd say.

Ok guys, keep the ideas coming, after a good number of items have been suggested I'l revise the list and post it formally as a set of solid goals to aim for over the coming months :)

We put a tool list together some time ago - I posted a spreadsheet with loads of tools on there. Some of it may be a bit too woodworking oriented, but it's something to add to with what you've got below.

For some reason I can't pick up a link to the message but its titled 'equipment list' and is from January - March time.

I'd like to see an enlarger and film development drums capable of handling 6x6 and 4x5 in addition to 35mm. (I'm not hard core enough to do 8x10.)

This should go with the above, actually. If they can be found, I bet that opaque projectors are pretty much free these days; an overhead projector would also do. That, the darkroom, and a laser printer could lead to great PCB etching!

Also:

Stuff suitable for front panels/enclosures:

- Drill press
- Sheet metal break
- Stuff to do anodised painting

Some of this is ridiculous but then it's easier to pare down a list than bulk it up.

In my (extensive) experience I've never seen a forum system work as universally as a google group does for a Hackspace. Admittedly groups has its limitation but these are not nearly as limited as a forum in my experience. However I'm happy to be proved wrong. Perhaps the group would work better if there were more managers assigned. 

I'm fairly sure I made Jonathan a manager meaning he can assign management rolls to more people. 

I have seen Wikis work very well at London and Nottingham (media wiki like wikipedia) and other flavours of wiki at Bristol and Cardiff. 

However who ever does the work (and keeps it working) wins. Really it's not about the tools it's about the effort. 

Bristol Hackspace uses Mailman instead of groups and many hardware and craft oriented people (who are not Linux geeks) find it difficult to use. 

We had a forum in the early days of Nottingham Hackspace but it didn't get used much though as I say I'm always delighted to be wrong about something.
