Programmatically loading a Vizmap style props file

For the plugin I'm working I'm trying to extract the default style from the java code to an external .props file so that non-programmers can work on it.  I was looking at the LoadVizmapTask inside the ImportVizmapAction class, but that isn't exposed to plugin development.

What is the correct way for a plugin to go about loading a style from a external .props file? And what is the correct place to store / package the .props file with my plugin?

All these question pertain to 2.8.2.
