I'll open with a series of selections from my first and still favorite introduction to cybernetics. Ashby's account of
genesis is bound to bring flashes of recognition and "habitual" associations to well-known passages among readers of Peirce.

10/3. The foundation. Let us start at the beginning. The most basic facts in biology are that this earth is now two
thousand million years old, and that the biologist studies mostly that which exists today. From these two facts follow
a well-known deduction, which I would like to restate in our terms.

property that is autocatalytic, i.e. whose occurrence at one point increases the probability that it will occur again at

in any way defective in its power of survival has been eliminated; and today the features of almost every form bear the
marks of being adapted to ensure survival rather than any other possible outcome. Eyes, roots, cilia, shells and claws
are so fashioned as to maximise the chance of survival. And when we study the brain we are again studying a means to
survival.

A great quote by Ross-Ashby.
I think motivation is the main phenomenon behind the "means to survival", not cognition. Unfortunately, many researchers focus on cognition and the cognitive functions of the brain. To me, Ross-Ashby's Homeostat is a model of motivation with very little cognitive function. However, his approach is purely linear while motivation works in a nonlinear fashion. Some of his conclusions in the passage above do not hold in a nonlinear world, the repetition of parts does not necessarily lead to instability if these parts are nonlinear, like if they saturate quickly or easily.
I think the existence of motivation in the human brain is what makes the study of the brain part of Cybernetics; motivation defines the purpose of behaviour, purpose is, or maybe, the exclusive baby of cybernetics, ja!

Hi Faisal, could you define your use of the terms "motivation" vs. "cognition"? Yes most of us focused on cognition because, the process from our sensors towards our central neural network is pretty clear, which leads to the emergence of a "concept" through recursive computations of the neurons. In this view, "motivation" seems to me as a later process built upon concepts. It involves more interpretation once the first-layer concept is available. Here is one example:
the first-layer concept - "there seems to be a tiger over there"
second-layer (interpretation) - "danger"
third-layer (run away) 
or
1-"There seems to be a rabbit over there"
2-“food!"
3-"catch it"
In this simplified layout, only the third layer (of emergence) seems to me as "motivation"... so, please let me know your thoughts.  Regards - Jason

Is that the way it works?
I am generally not interested in 'neuroscience' and the like because there's so much discourse which confuses description with explanation, with dangerous results.
But I thought your points were interesting, Jason. Surely no survival system would wire it in as 'integrate percepts, recognise pattern' - 'translate pattern into meaning' - 'take action' with regard to something as existential as 'snake!'?
I seem to feel that while I *can* do this process, I grasp threat and reward - at an existential level - just as threat and reward, and impelling action, and the rational narrative around it is, to a certain extent, window dressing? (Which is why it is so hard, and so important, to interject the 'choice' between the 'stimulus' and the 'response').
What attracts me to this side of cybernetics is that we are interested in behaviour, and purposeful behaviour in the world, and it's that which is in a sense the fundamental, the thing we want to understand - the mechanics beneath it are useful, necessary, can be modelled to understand, but are part of the means to understand (whereas we are quite well trained/wired to think of the smallest mechanical elements as 'fundamentals')

Dear Ben,

This whole thing called cybernetics really started as neuroscience... check the two ground-breaking papers in 1943, one dealing with how a concept is formed through neurons computation (McCulloch and Pitts), another dealing with how this thing called "feedback" functions in both brain and machine (Wiener et all).

Your comment is pointing at another interesting distinction that I'll be glad to discuss, i.e. the division of labor between our genes (past, cross-generational, experience/lessons) and our cognitive functionality (current, now-relevant, with a salt of future predictions.)  I was talking about the later, trying to apply my MLSO hypothetical framework (Multiple-Layer Self-Organization). In another discussion people are talking about the Lipet Experiment and if this thing called "free will" is true or not. I tend to use MLSO to explain that the Lipet phenomenon and free will are simply emergences on different layers, one is much later than the other. This connect to your attention to the "choice" as well.

Motivation as the root of the word implies, comes from motion, motivations are the causes of behaviour that change with time and observer. Changes can be quick as in emotions, medium speed as in animal behaviour or slow as in age related changes in humans, which interest me the most. So all emotions are motivations but not all motivations are emotions (a psychologist said so not my assertion). While cognition is quite constant, which relates to the arguments we had earlier about defining truth.
Motivation must be defined wrt an organism or organization, cognition pretends to not need an observer; an apple is an apple irrespective of who is observing. Thats why motivation belongs mainly to cybernetics while cognition is part of "objective" science. Of course motivation needs interpretation, it also needs a dynamic model of the observed in order to reflect the diversity and magnitude of motivation. But cognition taken to extreme without motivation looses its relevance. Apples and Banana don't mean anything to a carnivore.
Tigers can mean "safety" if the observer is a baby tiger and the observed is its mother. Your second and third layers must have motivation, without them the observation has no purpose.

So, Faisal, your "motivation" = cause of the behavior?
I have no problem acknowledging that it is changing with time and observer-dependent. My question is, 
How does this cause emerge? 
Or, how is "motivation" generated?
Cyberneticians prefer ontogenesis to ontology. I.e instead of asking "what it is" we ask "how does it happen"...

Re motivation: a Pask/von Foester self-organising system is intrinsically active; it 'eats variety'. Pask argues that 'man is  a system that needs to learn'.
To live = to be motivated = to cognise.

possibilities, in M_1 to M_k say. If now some operation C (for cat) acts on the mouse in state M_i, and C(M_i) gives,
say, M_2, then we may say that M has "survived" the operation of C, for M_2 is in the set M_1, ..., M_k.

If now a particular mouse is very skilled and always survives the operation C, then all the states C(M_1), C(M_2), ...,
C(M_k), are contained in the set M_1, ..., M_k. We now see that this representation of survival is identical with that
of the "stability" of a set (S.5/5). Thus the concepts of "survival" and "stability" can be brought into an exact
relationship; and facts and theorems about either can be used with the other, provided the exactness is sustained.

The states M are often defined in terms of variables. The states M_1, ..., M_k, that correspond to the living organism
are then those states in which certain *essential variables* are kept within assigned ("physiological") limits.

Hello Jason,

I hope I can satisfy some of your curiosity!
I am not really interested in how motivation is generated, this is a question to neuro-scientists. I am interested in the classification of motivations and how they relate to each other as time functions. I co-proposed a nonlinear model of animal motivation, you can read the paper here:

Kadri FL and Duncan, IJ 1995, "A New Nonlinear Model of Mechanisms of Motivation", Behavioural Processes 33, pp. 273-288.

Two distinguishing features of the model: There are no qualitative distinctions between the different motivations, only quantitive time-speed relationships. I think the differences between fear, hunger, sex and parenting are hard to accept as only quantitative but the process of regulation should work in the same mathematical way. The second distinction is the mechanism of regulation/homeostasis, the proposed mechanism is well defined, mathematically rigorous and does not depend on negative feedback. This is fundamentally different from Ashby and others.
When I project the motivational model on human behaviour I get age dependent predictions, which I am working on since the 1990's, but that's another story..

Well said quote from Ross-Ashby. Motivation is what moves the brain and all living organisms to survival, yet most studies of the brain focus on cognition.

Cognition alone does not define the goal of an organism, many people are attracted to it because, I think, it has a huge variety of “objective” categories. Motivation provides the means of reducing variety to a manageable number, such as Ross-Ashby’s Homeostat.

10/5. What is it survives, over the ages? Not the individual organism, but certain peculiarly well compounded
gene-patterns, particularly those that lead to the production of an individual that carries the gene-pattern well
protected within itself, and that, within the span of one generation, can look after itself.

What this means is that those gene-patterns are specially likely to survive (and therefore to exist today) that cause to
grow, between themselves and the dangerous world, some more or less elaborate mechanism for defence. So the genes in
'Testudo' cause the growth of a shell; and the genes in 'Homo' cause the growth of a brain. (The genes that did not
cause such growths have long since been eliminated.)

D is the set of those disturbances that threaten to make the deviation become large. F is the whole machinery --
mechanical, anatomical, neuronic -- that determines what the effect of D is on E.

Many other examples will occur later. Meanwhile we can summarise by saying that natural selection favours those
gene-patterns that get, in whatever way, a regulator F between the disturbances D and the essential variables E. Other
things being equal, the better F is as a regulator, the larger the organism's chance of survival.

Since this characteristic also implies that the regulator's function is to block the flow of information, let us look at
the thesis more closely to see whether it is reasonable.

Suppose that two water-baths are offered me, and I want to decide which to buy. I test each for a day against similar
disturbances and then look at the records of the temperatures; they are as in Fig. 10/6/1.

There is no doubt that Model B is the better; and I decide this precisely because its record gives me no information,
as does A's, about what disturbances, of heat or cold, came to it. The thermometer and water in bath B have been
unable, as it were, to see anything of the disturbances D.

In the last selection we found Ashby making what may strike us initially as a surprising inference. Starting from the
assumption that "an essential function of F as a regulator is that it shall block the transmission of variety from
disturbance to essential variable" he draws the conclusion that "the regulator's function is to block the flow of
information".

Ashby's reasoning at this point caused me to do a double take, because I normally think of information as a resource for
reducing variety, in other words, the dispersive quality of entropy. But a little reflection convinced me Ashby is
making sense here, so long as we read him right.

Jack Ring's suggestion, "Consider that the regulator blocks information that is detrimental to the system mission",
serves to point us in the right direction. Strictly speaking, though, it is not the information about temperature
variation that is detrimental to the system's mission but the temperature variation itself. The regulator acts in such
a way as to block the information about variation, but solely as a side effect of damping the real variation.

But we need to keep one thing in mind. When we speak of the regulator blocking the flow of information, we are talking
about the whole system (D, F, E) as a "black box", where the net information flow from input to output is as low as
possible. When we turn to a finer-grained analysis of regulated systems we will see that all sorts of information has
to be processed inside the system in order to achieve its mission.

Ashby said "the regulator's function is to block the flow of information".

This is exactly how a simple nonlinear element works, it blocks information on some ranges of stimuli, like a diode with a dead zone near zero or an amplifier with saturation.

Unfortunately, if we approach nonlinearity with linear tools then we end up with creating unnecessary complexity and will not see the essence of regulation. I had a meeting recently with Stuart Umpleby and a very small group where I explained this in detail.

Ashby’s approach to analysis is what is known as Modern Control Theory, it can accommodate nonlinear dynamics but essentially is a linear tool which depends on negative feedback control.

Modeling a simple regulator, such as hysteresis or feeding satiation in animals, will be unimaginably complex if attempted with only linear elements, but with a couple of diodes and saturation elements it would be dead easy.

Nonlinear analysis tools exist for continuous dynamic systems, such as Multidimensional Laplace Transforms.

tissues (the essential variables) to extreme and perhaps unphysiological states, the skilled hunter or earner will go
through the same difficult times with his liver and tissues never taken to extremes. In other words, his skill as a
regulator is shown by the fact, among others, that it prevents information about the times reaching the essential
variables. In the same way, the skilled provider for a family may go through difficult times without his family
realising that anything unusual has happened. The family of an unskilled provider would have discovered it.

In general, then, an essential feature of the good regulator is that *it blocks the flow of variety from disturbances to
essential variables*.

Maybe it will help to say a few things about the way forward ...

I'll be getting back to Ashby's text directly -- it's still the best guide I've found to the rudiments of cybernetics
and the underlying logic of developing systems. Once we've laid down a stable platform of basic ideas we'll be equipped
to explore many directions of application, extension, and generalization.

As far as the future goes ...

The way I see it, scientific inquiry is a cybernetic process carried on at every scale from individual inquirers to
whole communities of inquiry. That's the way forward for me, at least, but it's still a ways to go.

* Rhetoric, classically speaking, concerns those forms of argument which "consider the audience", that is, which take
into account the receiver's operating characteristics and prior state of information.

Studies of intelligent systems, natural or artificial, tend to focus on dynamic models or symbolic models, rarely both,
finding it difficult to integrate the two. But here we are asking the synthetic question -- How does a cybernetic
system come to develop semiotic systems, mediated both internally and externally, capable of bearing the information it
needs to survive and achieve its other objectives?

that acts as a simple passive block to the disturbances. Such is the tortoise's shell, which reduces a variety of

tree's bark, the seal's coat of blubber, and the human skull.

complex and mobile, with a defence that is equally complex and mobile. This is the defence of the fencer, in some
