Hi Jay

You’re welcome to come over to see us - we just opened second hub in the UK - more rural than urban but have learned plenty of lessons on hub operations over the past five years in this early market.  You would be very welcome to arrange a visit here.

Best of luck with the trip - sounds fantastic.

Hi all!

My name's Jay, I'm starting up a coworking space in the seethingly creative, entrepeneurial, interdisciplinary hotbed of Melbourne, Australia.

First up - a HUGE thanks for the resources posted by many of you in this and other contexts, it's mighty enabling!

I'd love to come and visit some existing coworking spaces, and perhaps talk with founders/facilitators/leaders as well as members.

I'll be in California between 15th and 20th of June (yes, next week!).

Then in Europe around the 27th June to the 3rd July (with Germany as the epicentre - but have questions, will travel!).

Then Hong Kong/China 4th July to round 11th (mostly Shenzhen but maybe up to Beijing as well).

If anybody would be available that would be great - and if any of you can suggest a kind of bucket list of cowork spaces in the region - like any that are so good they shouldn't be missed! -  that'd be appreciated too.

A bit about myself - I'm an ex NGO manager with heavy chops in volunteer management, informal learning, community development, systemic advocacy, and change, with recent years dedicated to entrepeneurial endeavours in everything from phones to jewelry, IT startups to underground music events. In between I've been a chef, DJ, scuba diver, writer, and astrologer. I probably shouldn't have left that one til last! Anyway I'm a multidisciplinary thinker and I can promise some good listening skills - maybe even some helpful insight from an outsiders POV - I've done lots of organisational consulting on change dynamics and similar processes.

For the cowork space we're developing in Melbourne's north (Thornbury), I'll be taking my cue from what many of you people have articulated about the importance of developing some kind of core community first. So we're renovating a building now but in the next days watch for an invitation to get involved and shape everything from the name to the membership structure. I'm open to any and all advice and will be posting questions here to you good people just as soon as I've read through the treasure trove that is the back catalogue of posts in this forum!

Thanks! Jay

Hi there Jay,

Sounds like a great trip you've got planned! You may know that Deskwanted and Deskmag are based in Berlin - we'd love for you to come and have a look at our workspace and have a chat with us about what you're planning in Melbourne. We can point you to some other coworking spaces that you should visit, too.

Also, while I've got you, I just wanted to tell you that we, along with the Hub Melbourne and Inspire9, are organising an Australian Coworking Conference to take place early next year! I'd love to add you to the Australian conference Google group so you can join the conversation. Feel free to get in contact and let us know when you'll be here (if you're heading to Berlin), and so I can add your email to the list.

Hopefully see you soon!
Anna

Hi Jay,

Sounds like an awesome vacation / coworking tour!

Where in California will you be over the next week? I am know quite a few of the spaces and would be glad to direct you to some nice ones. And when you make it up to San Francisco let's grab a beer!

Cheers,

Hello,

Anyone doing "pop up" co-working sites and/or one off events? I am working on a pop-up concept centered around writing software at the beach.

See beachcoding.wordpress.com for some hint of the idea.

I have some existing equipment and tech enabling me to offer free wireless at the beach to small groups and I am planning some events for the fall time frame and this includes some innovative special aspects, services, etc. fitting the beach theme.

Best,

Peter

First thing I think of when I hear a cowork pop-up is The Grind at SXSW conf this year. See if Benjamin Dyett could share some insight on the experience.

Let's not create new terms for old ones: one-off coworking is a "jelly"
pop-up coworking is tough because internet contracts require 12-36 mos.  Feasible, but that alone is tough.

I think there's overlap between pop-up and jelly coworking, but they're not necessarily the same thing.

Jelly is more for organizing people in a place that might not be designated for coworking - a cafe, a living room, a park, etc. It's low/no commitment and really doesn't require any infrastructure besides wifi, and Wifi is easier and easier every year with the availability of decent portable 4G hotspots, and even the ability for people to "BYO" internet if they have their own tether.

Jelly is more of an 'event' than a specific place. It sounds like this could be where Peter is headed.

For those who are unfamiliar with Jelly, check out http://workatjelly.com

Pop up concepts, on the other hand are "less permanent" spaces. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_retail

I think they'd bring with them many of the challenges of more permanent spaces without the benefits (like Jerome suggests, internet contracts would need to be negotiated for a shorter term or perhaps borrowed from a neighbor).

There's a bunch of things that I like about the idea of seasonal, short term coworking, if the Jelly-style events go well.

The lack of permanence to the space removes some of the emphasis on the space and the infrastructure, pushing the provider to make sure that they're making the most of the short-term community. The constraint of time could prove valuable creatively, as Startup Weekend and Hackthons do.

In addition to the time constraint factor, Geoff (my partner) has suggested that coworking from a space that you knew was going to go away was a great way to make sure that the community was "for real".

Ask yourself: What would happen to your "community" if your coworking space burnt down?

The more I think about it, the more I love the notion of seasonal communities - beach destinations being a great example. It's semi-transient, but also ripe for community. This sounds like a fun experiment. Keep us posted, Peter!

Alex,

In this vein. We are doing a summer popup space at a local
university. Its the traditional collaborative consumption model.
During they summer they have excess space, internet, etc. Rather than
see it go to waste we are repurposing it to help build community and
open up students and staff to new ways of working. It is not a one
off or even recurring jelly, but rather a full space open M-F from 8am
- 6pm for 3 months.

As far as I know DTP hasn't launched their space yet (though I could be wrong!), but there's an VERY vibrant Jelly on Thursdays. I've been a couple of times, it's overwhelmingly awesome.

When I was there 6 months ago, this was where the coworking community in Las Vegas was hailing from.

Above the Jelly venue, "The Beat", is also a tech library called /usr/lib that's pretty awesome and worth checking out.

I've heard about 2 or 3 other non-DTP driven coworking projects as well, but so far I don't think anything has launched.

I don't see a direct website, but CoBiz just opened in Las Vegas.

Also, search this group for "cobiz" or "las vegas" and you should find
