hi All,

Adrian from MakeHackVoid (Canberra HackerSpace) has kindly offered to
organize (if there is sufficient interest) a bulk order of the Silicon
Farmer SMT 2D6 kit ...

http://www.siliconfarmers.com/smtmanga

http://www.siliconfarmers.com/store/products/98-smt-2d6-learn-surface-mount-technology-kit.aspx

So, if you are interested in learning how to surface mount solder and
would like to get one of these kits (estimated cost around $15,
depending upon a number of factors) ... and support an SMD workshop,
please let me know. This would help get another important technical
skill / capability shared within our space.

This would be a good step towards the more significant SMD workshop that
Luke and I have been discussing for some time now.

If you are concerned about your basic soldering skills ... don't worry,
there is another through-hole kit (already at the space) to help you get
started ... and so that shouldn't be an impediment to having a go.

Adrian has also made some suggestions regarding modifying toaster ovens
(like we have) in regards to adding a thermocouple and software control.

So, I think it's time to get the remains bits we need for SMD soldering
by hand (anti-static tweezers, solder flux and small brush/isopropyl for
cleaning) ... and the toaster oven (thermocouple and some relays).

Any other thoughts or suggestions ?

I'd be in too. Self taught SMD'er so getting other peoples techniques and tips would be good.

The comic is cool, but is it possible to make a kit ourselves and pay them a nominal license fee of some kind for the instructions? Would be much more cost effective.

The SMTManga instructions are licensed CC-by-SA (Creative Commons), no
fee required ... but, please feel free to make a donation to Silicon
Farmers, if you wish.

There are plans to do something more extensive ... using our own design
... later on.

Best to make a start and not wait indefinitely for options that aren't
ready to go.

Accounting for cost needs to include time (for design, preparation, etc)
... and not just the basic raw hardware parts cost.

I would be interested as well, looks like a very good way to learn SMD.

I'm interested. Definitely something I have been thinking about after my own various, variable experiments...

Hey I'd be keen, can't say my through-hole soldering would be that great either, I just bought a cheap soldering iron years ago to 'fix' some things and was pretty much in the dump lots of solder on til it works camp. So it would be good to learn to do it properly.

Cheers

Always glad to up-skill. Anything I can do to get involved/help out in organizing?

Thanks,

I'm interested, too.
Been of a dabbler with through-hole components for ages, but rarely
tried SMD. So, I'd really appreciate the chance to learn new skills
from folks with such experience.

8 people positively responded. And, I expect a few other people will be
interested as well.

So, I'll ask Adrian to make a bulk purchase for us.

In the meantime, we can organize to acquire the tools still required
(the major tools have already been acquired).

And, get the toaster oven sorted out, e.g thermocouple and relay
control. A number of people have made suggestions, which will be
followed up. Thanks.

I'd like one set as well if it's not too late yet.

Anybody wanting some good motivation should check out Ken Shirriff's recent tear-downs of iDevice chargers. The most recent is from an official Apple 1" cube (2.5cm^3) USB charger and shows in great detail what a well-engineered SMT (mostly) device can pack in to a tiny package! Oh, and there's heaps of analysis which is excellent reading for anyone wanting to know a bit about power electronics design.

http://www.arcfn.com/2012/05/apple-iphone-charger-teardown-quality.html

The previous post shows a similar knock-off charger and he has some excellent commentary about where they cut corners and why some of it is pretty dangerous.

Both well worth the time to read!
