4 inch wide blue tape for 3D printing

Does anyone know a local source of 4" wide blue masking tape?  

If not I'm considering getting some in from amazon

The stuff we use at the hackerspace is called Edgelock and it's made by 3M

Yes, 3M 2093EL  is what I have been using, but have only been able to find 1.5" or 2" (5cm) wide locally.   

I'd like to get some 4 inch wide to get a surface without the join marks on wider objects such as raspberry pi cases

Ahh, right. sorry about that. missed the 4" thing.

I've just been sanding the join marks off my stuff :)

I don't worry about tape and just use glass, clean it with nail polish remover and it should stuck.. remembering you will need a heatbed.

I guess I should try glass first.  I have a 3mm AL plate at the moment, so should be easy enough to tape or bulldog clip to.

Not cheap, but you'll use 1/2 as much.

I'm in the market for some tape too, and have been wondering about the
blue tape used in the Hackerspace.

What are the properties that make this blue tape so good?
I recall a mention of using kapton tape for the heated bed. Is it any
better or worse?
What else has been tried?

Finally, I noticed that the cost is more than $31- the page is showing
" $31.25 + $4.99 shipping"

Scotch blue tape is available in Aust, (just checking on 4" or wider widths) I'm getting a price for you through 3M as I should be able to get it at a discount. not sure what min qty or price is at the moment but should know Thursday morning.

Thanks for checking Peter.  I'll hold off for a few days to see how you go.  

I did try ATA tape distributors in Port Melbourne a few weeks ago, but didn't get anywhere.  Its good you're trying 3M.

I was in bunnings earlier today and went past the tapes, so had a look because I was curious. The blue tape was, I think, <2 week removal. Given that the tape is replaced sooner(?), is it worth trying the slightly stickier, but cheaper, <5 day removal (green?) stuff?

From what I can gather, the main thing the blue tape has going for it is the slightly rough surface which gives the plastic something to grip to.

I see no reason why the green stuff wouldn't work just as well, except that I haven't seen anyone try it.

It definitely needs to be removable, which ordinary masking tape isn't. Also the less it bulges at the edges (due to accumulated dirt/grime before use), the better.

Of course, it has to stick very well to the bed, so it might not work well in that regard (esp since some people use it with ABS, which requires higher bed temps that might break down the glue).

IMO: Someone needs to try it. Of course, if it doesn't work, it'd be nice if the roll wasn't wasted and put to some other use. ;)

Hi Lachlan and others,

My ordering dept got back to me today and said that 3M don't import anything wider than 2" and there is to be a change to the part No's and that 2090 tape is being dropped for a different spec in Aust but still not in sizes above 2"

I've got them chasing for other suppliers, but at this point it looks like the import stuff is all that's available for now. I know that the auto industry uses heaps of different masking systems and I'll look into whats available/suitable.

Thanks for looking into it.    I rang ATA again to chase it, but they were going to have to check with 3M, and I expect the same response.  

I'll order a few rolls in from Amazon tomorrow regardless, of course it would still be good to find a local source if we can

Thanks for this observation. I was about to ask a newbie question, but
you've answered it right here. :)

Curious about a few other factors:
* What's the sticktion like with glass clipped to a heated bed,
compared with the masking tape method? Good for PLA and ABS?
* How frequently do you need to clean-up the glass with acetone
(presumably, it's the solvent in the nail-polish remover that does the
trick) ?

Anyone else have thoughts on weighing-up the pros and cons of
replacing one consumable with another?

Checked with our other main tape/abrasive supplier today (Norton - Saint
Gobain) and they also only import up to 50mm wide. I did have a chat
with a friend of mine who used to run a powder coating company and he
said they used to deal with a Melbourne firm who would import unslit
rolls of tape and had the equipment to slice to any size. He is trying
to find their details and hopefully they are still in business.
Will keep the list posted on how I go.

As a side point, has anyone tried the Teflon sheets that came with older
style laminators or used by T-shirt transfer presses. just a thought.
