Hey all,

Just sounding you good folks out at the moment, as it'll be a while before I
get stuck into something in this line - but who here has an interest in DIY
electric vehicles, conversions, and hybrids? Razr scooter-sized and up :)

Cheers,

Clae.

I'm awaiting for Mr Fusion first, should be available in three years time.

My thoughts for extending range on battery vehicles has always been a trailer mounted generator.  You have enough Batteries in the car for 95% of how you use it, and on those occasions you think you may be in danger of running out you hook an efficient diesel generator mounted on a trailer to your car and take your power source with you.  Not sure the logistics of how big that generator would need to be to supply enough power to directly run the Vehicle or whether you just stop the vehicle and run the generator to top up the batteries when able and needed.
If that generator was running on chip fat or biodeisel so much the better, but even burning deisel once a month is better than burning petrol every day.
Ive now moved on from the perfect candidate vehicle I used to drive, and never got around to converting it, so its a moot point for me.
The trailer mounted Generator could also be hired from a petrol station if you found yourself in trouble too far from home.

Why a trailer and not just the boot? Trailers create a lot of drag, which can be minimised, but still diminishing returns. Using a generator is good idea though - it is often referred to as a series hybrid car, rather than the prius style of parallel.

Part of the advantage of the trailer style is that means you can also
make the car smaller without the luggage space that is commonly only
need on those same long trips you need the generator for. Nearly all
of the trips that I need extreme range are the same times I need all
the luggage space my car can provide.

Making the commonly used configuration smaller and more efficient is
likely to reduce the total energy consumption.

Also the ability to hire it from a service station is easier when it's
a trailer.

OK good ideas.

Remind me to send you a picture of my "Big Boot" - it was a concept trailer I inherited which has only a single wheel.

Ohhh - I just found a reference to them - http://www.singlewheel.com/Auto/Big-BootFR.htm

Anyway, the idea is that they are very small, and reverse easily (solid connection to the car).

Could be a good style for your design.

Here's a single wheel trailer I was eyeing off on ebay recently:

One alternative configuration is a pusher-trailer; ie, a fuelled motor in the trailer which drives road wheels directly.  This turns the car+trailer into a parallel hybrid.

http://www.jstraubel.com/EVpusher/EVpusher2.htm

It occurs to me that one could also add an electric pusher-trailer with regen braking to a fuelled vehicle.  One advantage being that you can then very easily transfer your expensive electric drive system from one vehicle to another.

Hi Clae/ all,

Just a quick reminder that our friends from the Alternative Technology Association run a very active Electric vehicle group here in Melbourne, with regular meetings at Swinburne in Hawthorn. In fact, they have a meeting tomorrow on Lithium battery technology:

Worth checking them out - they have lots of experience in this space.

Cheers,

Paul

Hey All,

Hope everyone is well!

We're running a small workshop next wednesday night @ the electron
workshop. http://www.electronworkshop.com.au/

It's a beginners course in Arduino. You can view the details here:
http://www.meetup.com/Hackduino-Electronics-Meetup-Group/events/78667592/

We have 17 spots left, so if you would like to attend, please head over
to our meetup group & RSVP. All you need to do is bring a laptop/pc.
We'll be running our regular Hackduino Meetup in a couple of weeks &
I'll keep you all posted regarding future events.

If you would like more information, feel free to contact me.

Cheers,

Hi Mark,

This sounds great. I'm just starting work on an Arduino project so
it's very interesting. But, although I am pretty new to Arduino (I
have just tried loading in a couple of the sketches that come with the
compiler) I have played a little bit with the Texas Instruments MSP430
and I've got quite a lot of more general programming experience,
including in C - do you think this event is targeted at someone like
me or would it be better to come to a normal Hackduino event?
Especially given that places are limited, I thought I'd ask!

Is there any cost associated with the Hackduino events, in general?

Thanks,
Clare

Hi Clare,

Thanks for getting in touch.

Sounds like your making some progress!

At this stage, there is no cost to attend any of our Hackduino meetups
/ events.

As this workshop is really an Arduino 101 into, it's probably too
novice for your skills and experience.

I'll let you know as soon as our regular Hackduino Meetup has been
scheduled. We'd love you to attend our regular meetup.

Cheers,

Mark Butt
