I have a friend who is interested in a 3D printer.

I know some people have bought stuff from reprap discount, namely the ramps boards, but Im curious to know if anyone has an opinion on this:

April,

My partner Jen just bought that exact kit, from that exact supplier, including electronics for her printer. She's going to blog about it here (http://robot-lady.blogspot.com.au/) and will be assembling it at 3D printer nights if your friend wants to drop in and check it out.

Oooh, excited to see this come together. Looks like a fairly good price point for entry into the 3D Printing world.

Physically, is there anything 'wrong' or that could be improved with the overall design?

How would this base/mechanical platform compare to what you would get from the MendelMax2.0 beta (no electronics) kit?

Very interesting. I'll follow Jen's progress, and am keen to see how it all goes. Blog bookmarked.
BTW, I've ordered the low-cost kit for the MendelMax 2.0, and am considering blogging the build process, if anyone's curious.

Cheers,
Damien

The makerslide indiegogo?  If so, then I think the kits are slightly different.  The Ord Bot appears to come in a couple of different flavours.  The indiegogo campaign is the Quantum Ord bot, which I think is the smaller one.

It's probably not difficult to scale up the makerslide bits, but I think the motors are NEMA14s, as opposed to NEMA17s, so the motor mounts may be slightly different to accommodate that.

That said, I've ordered the quantum ord bot from the indiegogo, with a view to making it bigger.

Ben.

Ok, I wasnt aware of that. I just assumed it would have the same mounts, since I already have enough spare Nema 17s to make another printer.

I think of all the DIY printers I have seen at the hackerspace, they have all had what looked like Nema 17 motors, which is what I have on my mendelmax.  Given how cheap they are, why would one use smaller motors anyway?

Mass, space and required current are things that come to mind about selecting a nema14. ie a Nema 23 is not that much more $$ than a 17 so why dosen't everyone just get the biggest and best

Realise Ive been absent for a while, life has just got busy, I also have a second ordbot from Reprapdiscount, but havent proceeded very far with the build due to life getting in the way.  If things dont get too nuts ill be along next monday and ill bring along the new one and try to get a bit more done.  Still waiting on a few small bits, but have 99% of what is required.

Pretty much be building as per my current with a few changes, happy to show the kit and discuss.

So general question regarding the quality, does it compare to what you already have?

At this stage I have the platform built and have uploaded the firmware which is working through Pronterface.  Next is to connect the motors, the end stops and the heated bed.  The first thing that springs to mind for me is that compared to other assemblies of similar machines that I have completed this one is very easy and comes half assembled in the box.

Cheers
Rob
