econet on risc pc

I've used an econet system for years with just 3 A5000s and no problems. Now
I've tried to connect my SA RPC running Risc OS 3.7 and all is not well.
If I run !Server on the rpc I can log on from the A5000 and get a directory
display but if I try to download any file I get No Reply from Station xxx
error. But... If I try to save a file to the rpc it works straight away.
(I want this so I can back up the A5000s hard drive onto the rpc, but I want
a two-way connection as I sometimes alter files using the rpc)
If I run !Spooler on the A5000 (so I can have effectively two parallel port
printers connected to the rpc without using a lot of switch boxes (one
printer is also connected to a Windows box)) then I can print the first text
file ok but subsequent text files and all other files fail.
I'm using a version of !Server (and !Spooler) dating from 1991. I've
downloaded the patches from the Acorn legacy site but they don't work with
this version.
Presumably there is another version, but where do I get it from? Surely it
can't be a commercial product these days?
Or is something else wrong?

From what you say here - i.e. the Risc PC cannot act as a server - you have
come across the classic hardware bug in the Risc PC's Econet card.
Acorn made a mistake on the cards. I had to send mine back to Acorn to get
it fixed. I spent ages on the phone to them before they admitted the
problem and agreed to fix it.
Problem is... Acorn are no more!
You could *try* using software other than Level 4 file server. For example,
how about giving Access (Freeway & ShareFS) a go?

If I can get hold of it. Isn't it commercial software? I don't mind paying
something but I'm reluctant to spend a lot of money on technology which is
past its sell-by date!

Access should work over Econet. The stuff is all softloaded in the
Universal Boot, and I have seen it working (albeit badly) over Nexus,
with all the modules being softloaded. The problem with that
installation might have been partially down to it having been installed
by an idiot, who thought that using a zippytie to connect the network
cable to a main hot water pipe was acceptable for a long run, and who
fundamentally didn't know or ask how Access worked.

Dunno. Acorn had to do something with the hardware.
Of course, I might be wrong... Your problem could be due to something else
entirely.

There is one possible way round this, which is to have 2 cards in say an A5000
Level 4 server, one a conventional Econet and 1 Classnet. Classnet is effectively
Econet over 10base2 network hardware. The RPC also has Classnet card.
The two parts will talk to each other seamlessly.
