Howdy, Collexioneers!

I just wanted to remind everyone that an open house of sorts has been arranged in partnership with the Lexington Art League for this Saturday at the Loudoun House (a stone's throw from the Collexion hackerspace).

Everyone with a neat, project to show off is invited to do so at 7pm. This is an un-curated and open-to-hackers-of-all-levels show-and-tell. Completed and in-progress projects are equally welcome. There is no application process. Just show up in all of your awesome glory.

Please keep them somewhat portable, though. We will be setting up in the middle of the current exhibition, "Scripts & Systems" (a very tech-friendly show - more information here - you'll like it, I promise). I can set up a few tables for those who need them (give me a heads up by Thursday, if you don't mind).

Dustin Mays? We talked about this a long time ago - but are we still able to have a Makerbot demo at LAL? If a laptop is needed, I volunteer mine.

Dave Hempy? Is is still possible to take a small walking tour down to the hackerspace for a CNC demo?

Thanks everyone! Let's get out there and get some community exposure for Collexion! Come show off your techno-wizardry!

Charlie! I should be able to make this and do a Makerbot presentation. If you can remind me on, like, Friday, that would be super helpful, because I ALWAYS forget about these events.

I think I can get a prototype going of a project i'm working on ready by then but it requires graphics. Should I bring my own computer and monitor or will that be available? I also will need to use python as well. I have no laptop strong enough in the graohics department.

The bad news is that I am not available then.  L

The good news is that several people on the CNC team know as much as I do about our CNC router, and several know far more than I do about CNC routers in general.  J

I really hope someone steps up to lead a demo like this.  Anyone who was at our two-hour demo that Wednesday night can certainly give a useful ten or twenty minute overview.  I can meet someone for an hour at the space before then to set up a few cuts to show off for our company.  Preferably over lunch, at 9 am or 4 pm, but I’ll work with whatever schedule you’ve got.

Any takers?

Aw. That's unfortunate.

Would someone else from the CNC team mind doing a demo?
If you're uncomfortable presenting in front of an audience, I can try and do the talking - though I'm not even remotely qualified.

Dustin, can you take another look at the Makerbot before the event? I went in yesterday to fiddle with things and I don't think I changed much, but you should double check that we can print a calibration cube. I wasn't having a lot of luck.

Hi CollexioNC'rs

Tonight I'd like to put together a small Keynote presentation about the CNC Milling Machine build and what's possible.  If anybody has pictures of the build and can post them, I may use them for the presentation.

Also, if you personally have a vision, dream, or whacky idea of what you'd "Like" to build with the CNC Milling Machine and can send a picture that might also be fun.  Your picture can be a photo, CAD drawing, or even napkin sketch.  We hope to spark the imagination of participants on Saturday.

Nice article in todays Hearld-Leader.  Check out the online version here:  http://www.kentucky.com/2012/07/05/2249228/makerbot-thing-o-matic-is-set.html

Janine: It took about 45 mins or so. Once I find the optimal settings for printing the bloxen, I think I can reduce that time by at least ten minutes. We might even want to just scale them down to half their size, as well as the weapons and the printable ammo. That way it'll use less plastic and will print faster. I may also play with reducing the in-fill to 5%. The one I printed yesterday had 15% infill and was extremely light and sturdy, so reducing it some shouldn't hurt.

What are we going to consider a full set of pieces?

Dustin Mays

There is printable ammo on thingiverse that we can use. We could also alter the models by hand to shrink them, but keep the scale for the part the penny goes into. I think a full set of pieces will be six flags, two weapons, 20 printed ammo, and, oh, 20 bloxen?

I vote to NOT scale down the weapons etc. No sense in printing weapons if we already have pennies. Just takes more time. I know we would save it and more back by scaling down but the penny is going to be far more destructive than a scaled down plastic weapon. And, I am already printing full scale bloxen which I hate to not use. I am printing several at once and it goes fairly fast since I go watch TV or read while the printing is happening.

Good points, John. What we save in plastic for bloxen, etc. will be used up by printing ammo and pennies will be definitely smash better.

Don't forget, though, that the Canadians have stopped the production
of their pennies.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_%28Canadian_coin%29#Abolition

Umm, why is this a concern? Well, it could affect international
competitions (e.g., The Canadians would be using nickles versus our
pennies!). And, once the Canadians invade and take over the US... ;-)

Thanks to everyone who participated this afternoon. There was a tremendous turnout!

Over 200 people showed up to see the demos and the exhibition. Hopefully that excitement continues and translates into good things for Collexion.

Watch for Dustin on ABC 36 tonight! His demo of the Makerbot was filmed and may make the news.

Cheers, everyone! Keep being awesome.

Stephanie at LAL said "over 200." When I talk to her again, I'll see if she has a  more specific number.

The subject says July 7th at 7pm.  Nobody was there at 7pm.

Yeah, Charlie got the time mixed up and mentioned it in an earlier email I think. Sorry about the confusion!
