Good afternoon, all

Just wanted to send a reminder that the next BGLUG meeting will be at the Collexion space next week Thursday at 2p with Jordan Keyes leading/presenting.

Hope everyone has a great next 10 days :)

2 PM?  Or 7 PM?

I hope to make it.  Any prep recommended for a total raspberry newb?

Really, 2pm on thurs? Are all meetings going to be during work hours? I would like to attend the BGLUG meetings, but won't be able to if they are during work hours.

Hoping this is a typo :)

I'm stoked. I just got mine in over the weekend.

I've fiddled with mine a bit. The well-documented finicky power
demands and finicky USB behavior are genuine problems (v2 board
revision is a _very good thing_), and they aren't terribly powerful,
but it isn't hard to extract $35 of entertainment. The level of
blackbox on certain parts of the boot process/firmware is also super
disappointing, if legally inevitable.

Hoping to make the meeting for a change to chat with some other people
who have actually had their hands on boards for a while, but I might
have a counter-obligation.

OK...I'm not finding anywhere (state-side) where I can buy just the RPi for $35.  On backorder from MCM the rest of the month.  So, I'm going to order my wife a pi-powersupply-case-SDcard kit from MCM: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/83-14346&green=2A7E7A63-BE22-588C-019B-F8C638B444D1 .  Please share if you can find somewhere with just the RPi alone in stock, please!

I'll pay the shipping if anyone else wants one.  Reply back by 4pm Tuesday with a link to what you want me to order.  You can pay me at the meeting next week, or sooner if you can't wait that long to come pick it up.

-dave,

my 2cents: I think that link is a rip off. Also, you dont need a power adapter, any micro usb cable will provide power.

Here is where i got my 2 raspberry pi's. Sometimes i go to this site to check and its a little tricky.  It will say you cant order any, but if you play around with different links and images for raspberrypis on the site, it will let you add it to the cart and buy.  I just tested it and the link below seems to work just fine.  Letting you add it to the cart.

They are always on back order, and will take about 4-6 weeks to get them in...hence why i ordered 2 of them.  You get one and then decide "oh, i could use another one for <fill in the blank> " and you have to wait another 6 weeks.

Oh, and i forgot.  You can print your own case on the makerbot.  I have printed a decent one for my pi.  Maybe I can show my case and try to print a half of a case during the meeting.  Takes about 1-2 hours to print each half.

Here is the case i printed: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:25363

Huh.  That’s weird.

Seeing your note, I went back to Newark.com again.  Still says its backordered.  I clicked on “Check More Stock” and it says 100 more due Oct 1.  I fiddled around a little and didn’t find anything like what you found.  If you can tell me your secret mojo, I’d appreciate it.  I agree, the kit from MCM is a bit bloated for anyone with a parts bin…but I’m impatient!

I’ll call their order line tomorrow and see if they can fulfill or not.  If not, I’ll just order the kit.

Odd… MCM and Newark might be the same thing.  They have the same logo and their web sites look identical.

Well…off to bed.

Newark, Element14, MCM, and several other electronics vendors are all
part of Premier Farnell ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premier_Farnell
), targeted to different niches by intended use or geography. They
also own CadSoft (EAGLE, etc.)

Given the Raspberry Pi "The vendors order directly from the
manufacturer" distribution plan, and the places I've seen with stock,
I get the feeling Farnell is buying the entire output of one or more
lines (which they are possibly also supplying with raw components)
then shuffling the Pis out to their subsidiaries by some
not-externally-observable plan.

The problem with powering a Pi via a computer's usb port is that it (the B model which is currently being sold) requires a steady 750mA power source, which computers and powered hubs are unable to provide (according to my very quick research). You can definitely run a Pi off of a USB port, but it won't have enough power to fully utilize it (playing HD video in particular) and running with less than 750mA may cause instability. I've been powering mine with a spare iPhone wall wart (5V/1A), and it has been rock solid.

If I recall correctly, USB 3's spec allows for much greater amperage for "charging purposes"

The problem is that USB is a hodge-podge of differing specifications
and applications. It's been extended well beyond what it was
originally intended for, with the result is that there are
several versions, and several variations within each version,
relating to the speed of the connection, as well as the power
sourced by each version/variation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usb#Power

Now, where'd I put that USB powered hot-dog cooker (Think I'm joking?)?

Jason,
If you place an order, I'll take one.  If you do let me know and I'll bring you cash.
....unless of course you'll take payment in CNC milling machine dust.  I have lots of that on hand.

That's really weird.  Thanks for the link, Jason.

Derek - I already ordered one the other day, but Jason's link still looks good.
