Translating Kiva

Hello,

I have learned in my past projects that localization will speed up
things by x10. Does anyone have a clue who to contact in order to have
the info if Kiva could be translated? I would be delighted to do the
finnish version :-)

We've talked of localizing the Kiva site, but don't have the resources at the moment. 

I've had some ideas on how we could start crowd-sourcing the translations though, so that people such as yourself could produce a translation for us in your local language. Maybe I should get those ideas together and post them up here.

i can help. i'm sure it would greatly assist in getting more finns to use kiva, and maybe more would join http://www.kiva.org/team/finland

Btw, the kivaenfrancais.org site is a crowd-sourced effort that is an easily localized interface to Kiva. Currently it has been translated in German, French, English, and Spanish. It is in dire need of some love (it should probably be updated to use Ember.js rather than the less flexible sproutcore 1.x) but all it requires for a new language is translation of a string file and someone to deploy it.

We had been hosting it on a traditional web sever but since it is all static HTML/js we could probably host it on github pages instead making deployment even simpler.

I'm happy to chat more on this if people are interested.

@Skylar Putting the code up on Github would be a great first step towards getting some work done on it. I see this: https://github.com/skylar/Kiva-Loan-Browser is that the code or is the code only offline?

That's the code. Also, there is also the kapi-proxy:

It is a small node.js program that caches all the current loans so you can fetch them in nice quick blobs. It also has the added feature that it attempts to translate the loan description and loan use fields from the Google Translate API and make them available too. (Currently free use of the Translate API is limited such that I can only do one language at a time - French for now - but it works well enough, at least for French, and the feedback is that it is better than having the English mixed in with a French UI).

kapi-proxy actually implements a long standing request I've had for the API - that it return IDs only (all, and unpaged) as an option for any search. This is really helpful for client-side apps that need to build a local index for which it can later fetch full records on-demand.
